w111 ?

My wife has her eye on a 1965 220S, I don't know anything about these cars. Can anyone lead me some where I can educate myself.

RE: w111 ?

If it's a 220S then I assume it's a heckflosse (fintail) sedan?

They're wonderful, characterful cars.

Here is one site devoted to them that I have found useful in the past:

http://www.heckflosse.nl/

My W111 Cabriolet was one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Wow, that car looks spectacular.  Incredibly original. Congrats!

We do have a few heckflosse owners here btw.

RE: w111 ?

It seems to be a very solid example, records indicate the same owner since 1984 with only about six thousand miles since then. So it might even be a 64K mile car. The igniton switch is giving us some trouble does not want to keep power to the igniton in the on position. Is this switch servicable (take it apart and clean the contact points) if I remove it?

These switches are notorious.  I know of several people who've replaced them;
I'll ask around and see if anyone's serviced theirs.

Re: w111 ?

The easiest thing to do is add a relay. There is a pin inside that gets pitted. Under full current/drain it can be finicky. The relay requires very little current as a trigger and the worn pin is usually fine.

I'm adding relays to my 190SL for the headlights and the ignition switch. The headlights have been upgraded to Cibie Valeo E-codes, even with a brand new wiring harness I don't want to risk a failure of the expensive headlight switch or the even more expensive ignition switch.

Great looking Heckflosse sedan. I have a 66 230S my father bought new. There is a more active mailing list here -

http://groups.google.com/group/heckflosse

I have a G class also. Have considered a Mog - still waiting for a 406 or 416 SWB 2 door hard-cab w/ the 3 way spider dumb bed, fast axles, and fast gears.

RE: w111 ?

mb 230s, where do you install the relay, do you have a diagram?

I too am looking for a 416 doka with tipper bed, have seen some mogs on ebay recently that originated from this source in Germany http://www.classicunimogs.com/unimogs_4sale.html#dokaft ...for what it is worth.

I sold my 463 when the warr ran out too many computers for me, would like to find a nice 460 diesel (along with the rest of North America).

Re: w111 ?

I don't have a diagram - it is pretty easy to figure out with a circuit tester. Just find the hot unswitched and the hot after the switch is engaged. Pin-Outs for the relay are explained here (along with how to wire for headlight applications).

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/relays/relays.html

I'd order a set of lights too - outstanding improvement.

If you don't mind me asking - what did you pay for the 220S?
