advice about r129 sl300

I own a 2000 e320 wagon and now I'm looking at adding an early 90's sl300. Any tips about years to avoid or other issues? I like the styling of the sl300 better than the later 320SL. Are there any compelling reasons to go with a 320SL over SL300?

It's a 300SL or a 300SL-24 not an SL300 and an SL320 not a 320SL.

The 300 has the M103 engine which is prone to head gasket failure - the M104 appears in the 300SL-24 and a later version in the 320 - HFM ignition came in '94/'95 depending on what country you're in. All suffer from the engine wiring harness disintegrating.

The later cars have improvements to equipment and safety systems etc so technically better but if you prefer the early styling then you've already made the decision!

4-speed auto was standard with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed auto available as an option.

Hi Stats007 (you are on here too!)

Could I add that when I had my 300SL (12 valve), the head gasket went and was told that better to have the stem seals and valves looked at at the same time but that I was lucky in that the 24 valve was more complex and problematic (read - expensive) to work on with head gasket repairs.

That said, they 'sing' - you really feel the weight of the car with the 12 valve inline 6.

My chief concern would be the roof - make sure and sure and sure again that all is working normally!

A great car and I miss mine
