CDI Oil Change - Other routine Maintenance

Just finished changing the engine oil and filter today, I'm kinda old school, I like to do my own routine maintenance if and when I can.

The entire process is very straight forward once you remove all of the plastic items. It took more time to remove & replace the plastic underbody panel than it did to drain & refill the oil...

I purchased my oil & filter from my local dealer due to wanting to do it spur of the moment and I wanted to find out if they were going to be competitive on their pricing. $17 for filter & $7 a quart for the oil... not to competitive. It was kinda funny, the parts guy told me that he would sell me the oil this time but he could not sell it to me again since they are instructed at this dealership not to sell this oil to customers, it's only for their repair techs. I just laughed and didn't bother to point out how stupid that policy was but it made my decision to purchase elsewhere a lot easier. When I got home I went and placed an order with AVlube.com for enough oil to do 3 changes. It came out to be about $7.25qt delivered to my house. Now I need to find a good place to source the filters. Has anyone purchased filters from Germanfilter.com. They have the OEM CDI oil filter made by Mann for about $9.37 if you buy 4, I'm not sure if it comes with the O rings but would expect it to.

Tip - Don't think that you have to purchase the special Mercedes oil filter wrench PN 642-589-00-09-00, you can easily use a common strap wrench to loosen & tighten the oil filter cap. A strap wrench can be found at just about any local auto parts store for a fraction of the cost. I've had mine for many years and I think it cost under $10 at the time.

When I was doing the oil change I started looking around to determine how to do other maintenance things like replacing the air and fuel filters. This is one tightly packed engine compartment!!! Has anyone replaced either the air or the fuel filter in their CDI? Any tips or tricks you can share?

Tip 1: Before your next oil change, get this guy. It'll save you a lot of time and mess.

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/MIT-7201.html

Tip 2: Get the Startek Service DVD for the R251. It has the 320CDI engine and instructions for the air and fuel filter changes. You need a special tool for the CLIC Clamps on the fuel filter lines.

Tip 3: Get the Startek Service DVD for the W164. It doesn't include the 320CDI engine, but has everything else for your ML.

Tip 4: Duval sells the MB branded filters and all parts at a discount. They were $12 and change the last time I ordered.

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213951

List price for the Mobil 1 oil for the 320CDI is $5.95/qt. It sounds like your dealer is Atlanta Classic. I got mine for $5.30/qt in a 6 case lot from my dealer about 6 weeks ago.

RE: CDI Oil Change - Other routine Maintenance

Regarding the CLIC clamps on the fuel lines to the fuel filter:  Mercedes forbids replacing these with anything else.

Regarding the oil extractor:  Second that suggestions strongly, although if you have shop air there's another MityVac model that will use that, i.e. no hand pumping.

Regarding use of a strap wrench:  You won't get the Mercedes-specified torque when reinstalling the cap without the special tool.

Just a note regarding the GL:  The GL has a "brace" between the two front suspension towers--like aftermarket hotrod stuff for BMWs, etc.--and this brace must be removed before the plastic engine cover can be removed.

I'm pretty sure that the R-Class does too.

Also, in addition to not being allowed to use a different type of clamp on the fuel hoses, you're also not supposed to reuse the old ones.

Dutch,
Did you mean the 'Model 251' DVD for the R320CDI? Thanks,

Dutch,

You are not concerned about leaving old oil and junk behind by using that dip stick vacuum pump?

Not at all. Run the engine to get it hot and any crap suspended in the oil. Vacuum it out.

When I've pulled the drain plug after doing this, nary a drop comes out.

Newbie here. Excuse my ignorance, but where is the oil filter located on the 320CDI? I had a VW TDI and know it was on top. I am about to change the oil in my wifes truck. Thank you.

If you take off the engine cover, I believe in the CDI engine it's on the bottom right corner of the engine (looking at the picture).

I'm not 100% sure though. There should be a picture diagram of this in the owner's manual.

That's it. You need to remove the engine cover. It lifts straight up and is held in place with 5 (3 towards the fron and 2 towards the back) friction catches in rubber grommets. Easy to remove. A little trickier to replace.
