The W460 paint code compilation project

So coming from the classic watercooled VW world (I also have a '76 VW Rabbit w/ 58,000 original miles--Rallye Yellow L10A is the color name), there has been info gathered by enthusiasts on everything from exterior paint codes to graphics/pinstripes to interior colors to option packages to original recall notices, etc. Before I try to bite off WAY more than I can chew, I'd first like to start by compiling a historical database of the exterior paint codes offered by Mercedes-Benz on W460's(I have love for the W461's and W463's but I'd like to concentrate on the W460's first.). For example, this compilation of VW Rabbit paint codes is what I am trying to emulate; [url]http://www.mk1vw.info/paint1.php
In regards to the W460 info, I'd also like to try to find out which colors were offered which years and in which countries, if certain colors were only available on certain models, what exterior stripes/graphics were offered, etc...most importantly I want to gather pictures of real life W460's to accompany these color codes so that everyone can see what the heck Gentian Blue looks like in real life.

That being said, I really need YOUR help with this endeavor. If you have old brochures with pictures of colors offered for specific years/models/countries and/or stripes/graphics, color charts, etc, please contact me with them. If you have pictures of G's with missing colors(ie colors not already found posted below), please contact me with those. This project won't be successful without your contributions. THANK YOU in advance!!!

First, some helpful info via EddieG(needamerc) on where your color code # is located;

"On a W460, see the lower plate[in the engine bay on air inlet], top four digit code, 9735.
At times it takes some interpreting, cross-reference with RAL codes and 3 digit MB codes."

Keep in mind that there appears to be no pattern to the first digit before the 3 digit MB color code...some vehicles have a 1, some a 5, some a 7, some a 9 as the prefix. Only the last 3 digits matter.

Factory color charts...

1980: 5 standard colors(Creamy White and Wheat Yellow look too yellowy and Agave Green looks too black here);

1981: 22 optional metallic colors;

1983-1984: four new metallic paints on right side of chart;

Also, RAL chart(~Euro standardization);

Real life G colors(in alphabetical order);

Agate Green DB815

Agave Green DB6880

Anthracite Grey Metallic DB7172

Astral Silver Metallic DB735

Carmine Red RAL3002/DB3535

Creamy White RAL9001

Cypress Green DB876

Fir Green DB6295/RAL6009

Gentian Blue DB5361/RAL5010

Lapis Blue DB932

Light Ivory DB1623/RAL1015

Magenta Red Metallic DB???(waiting on Hus55)

Sky Blue RAL5015

Zinc Yellow RAL1018

AGAIN, I NEED YOUR HELP IN GATHERING MORE PICTURES OF THE REAL LIFE G COLORS NOT ALREADY FOUND IN THIS THREAD(I DON'T NEED DOUBLES UNLESS THE QUALITY OF YOURS TRUMPS THE QUALITY OF ONE HERE). PLEASE PM ME WITH THIS INFO!!!

PS--If any of my colors or info is incorrect, please advise. Thank you!!

PPS--A very special thanks to Dutch, Harald, Eddie, Dave, Steve, Tom, Woody, John, etc...

TIA!
Jeremy

Is this any use?

Yes, the green Cabrio is of help only if you know the color code and only if a representative of the color isn't already above. Please delete your other posts (besides the Colorado Beige pic above) in order to keep this thread clean. I'm only looking for good quality pics of entire W460's that accurately reflect the G colors in "real life." Thank you.

I may tackle W461 and W463 colors at a later point by this current project revolves around W460's only. Thank you!!!

Here are a few that may add to your pallet. You will need to match them up as I do not know the names of the colors.

Hi jeremyw, I liked you small colour mapping project, but the factory in Graz used only the colour codes from Mercedes Trucks,
or any colours for special orders. Was your project supposed to find colours for all Mercedes or Geländewagen only?

It looks like a few of the pictures offered you are from vehicles that are repainted with just any other colour the owner liked.
Including colours from the Daimler-Benz passenger cars move our procject into a different league as different colours for passenger
cars was offered to different countries at different years... In that case will Glasurit, DuPont or any RAL-web pages offer colour maps.
The VIN # or data card is the best way to find what colours were used. From 1979-1985 Graz mainly offered the colours shown at 4x4abc.com

Hi there,

The point of my small W460 color project was to find/post REAL LIFE pictures of the colors Mercedes offered worldwide on W460 G-Wagen's. In other words, when you see the color Wheat Yellow DB1681 on Harald's color chart, what did/does that color look like in real life on a G-Wagen? While I appreciate colors, I want to keep this W460 only for now as they are the "original" G's and info is getting more and more difficult to find as time goes on. Think of this as a sort of historical record if you will.

Yes, I understand that many of the pics posted are not of factory Mercedes colors. I'd love to clean up the thread, delete those, and keep the thread Mercedes factory only but I don't have moderator status to do so.

If you have any further info on W460 G colors offered, pictures of said colors, etc, please post. Thank you!

YES, I agree, it much more interesting to contribute to what was original than what each individial person on the globe modify to they car...
If you make a list of what to delete/change to this thread I think DUTCH, the moderator, will help.

A question. If we have photos of W463's in W460 colours are they useful? I have an Arctic White DB(9)147 W463 in at the moment. I believe that colour was available on W460's (open to correction on that). Eddie.

Re: The W460 paint code compilation project

That might be a lot of deletions for the Dutch.

A question. If we have photos of W463's in W460 colours are they useful? I have an Arctic White DB(9)147 W463 in at the moment. I believe that colour was available on W460's (open to correction on that). Eddie.

Yes, thanks Eddie! However, none of my W460 color charts show an Arctic White DB147...that doesn't mean it didn't come on a W460 however as I don't have all of the W460 color charts(looking for more, hint hint).
Please post, thanks!

Ah, you're very right Mark. I'll add it to my list above thanks!

Perhaps Lapis Blue like Woody's. There are about 4 blue hues that look fairly similar (at least on my color chart).

RE: The W460 paint code compilation project

Updated list;

First, some helpful info via EddieG(needamerc) on where your color code # is located;

1980: 5 standard colors(Creamy White and Wheat Yellow look too yellowy and Agave Green looks too black here);

1981: 22 optional metallic colors;

1983-1984: four new metallic paints on right side of chart;

Also, RAL chart(~Euro standardization);

Real life G colors(in alphabetical order);

Agate Green DB815

Agave Green DB6880

Anthracite Grey Metallic DB7172

Astral Silver Metallic DB735

Carmine Red RAL3002/DB3535

Creamy White RAL9001

Cypress Green DB876

Fir Green DB6295/RAL6009

Gentian Blue DB5361/RAL5010

Lapis Blue DB932

Light Ivory DB1623/RAL1015

Magenta Red Metallic DB???(waiting on Hus55)

Sky Blue RAL5015

(maybe??)Wine Red DB3558/RAL3005

Zinc Yellow RAL1018

AGAIN, I NEED YOUR HELP IN GATHERING MORE PICTURES OF ONLY THE ORIGINAL/FACTORY/OEM W460 GELANDEWAGEN COLORS NOT ALREADY FOUND IN THIS THREAD(I DON'T NEED DOUBLES UNLESS THE QUALITY OF YOURS TRUMPS THE QUALITY OF ONE HERE). I DO NOT WANT PICS OF NON-W460 GWAGEN COLORS, W463 COLORS, AFTERMARKET COLORS, THANKS THOUGH. PLEASE PM ME WITH ANY INFO!!!

PS--If any of my colors or info is incorrect, please advise. Thank you!!

RE: The W460 paint code compilation project

J-dawg,

Nice job man. Cool that you're doing this!

I feel like I've mentioned this before so forgive me if it's a repeat. If not, could be that I meant to post and didn't.

When my paint guys were trying to find my RAL9001, they ended up calling Dupont because the RAL9001 formula they had wasn't producing a paint sample that matched. The nice lady at Dupont said that my RAL9001 was not the creamy white on the regular MB consumer paint charts but was from the MB Truck (or Fleet) charts (just as 460332 mentioned on the previous page). With that, she gave them a paint formula that's really really close the original paint on my truck. I'm fairly certain the creamy white chips from the '83 and later charts don't represent the 9001 white on early 460's.
Any luck on getting a hold of the "MB truck (or fleet) charts that 460332 and Dupont is talking about?

RE: The W460 paint code compilation project

Jeremy.

The Unimog codes could be helpful here too. Some "cross-pollination" evident?

Given the frequency of SA and/or customer specific orders, it might get difficult to stick to a W460 "Standard" quest.

Respect for your efforts so far.

Eddie.

Thanks Steveo!

I wish I could find more pics to put into this historical registry but it's been a bit challenging thus far.

Interesting on your RAL9001. So is yours creamier than original creamy?
I don't have access to those charts, sorry. Eddie??

RE: The W460 paint code compilation project

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forum and new in the G world. I'm restoring an ^87 460 and I wanted to change the color. I liked the "Otto" blue the famous Gunter Holtorf G, and wanted to know if you can tell me the name and RAL code of that color.

Thank you.

Re: The W460 paint code compilation project

Just came across this thread again and am sorry to see it has last been updated in 2014.

Could we resurrect it an possibly include 463's.

A couple of years have gone by an many new colours have been introduced.
