G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

Craig Reece just forwarded this to me.

Thought you'd all get a kick out of it if you haven't seen it.

I wouldn't do it....cuz I don't have it. Hey, if you got.........

Re: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

That's wild. So how exactly does one drift a 4 wheel drive vehicle? I know the diffs are open in that video obviously, but its not like 100% of the power suddenly transfers to the rear wheels. Is he actually doing a 4 wheel burnout around that traffic circle?

Re: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

You can see he jerks the wheel pretty hard in the beginning to initiate it... thus his inside front lifting off... then it drops back down once he gets it settled into the drift. Maybe once you get it settle in it'll hold a drift... never done this one before... if tried in big snow fields where there was consistent and little traction and it just doesn't want to drift much... maybe i wasn't trying hard enough...

Testament that these vehicles aren't "that" top heavy...

is there anything that says this is actually a g55 anyway? if it is a current vehicle it is safe to say he's got ESP off. it'd be fun to kick it on in the middle of it and see what happens...

Re: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

Matt,

in a full time 4WD vehicle, like the 463 G, torque is evenly distributed to all 4 wheels (with the diffs open).

Why would 100% of the "power" suddenly transfer to the rear wheels? Don't listen too much to the 4x4 PR hype. Nothing transfers anywhere.
#2 on my list:
http://4x4abc.com/4WD101/4WD-AWD-autoAWD.html

How does one drift with a 4x4? Apply more torque than need on a reduced traction (wet, snow etc) surface and steer left or right. Don't forget to turn ESP off. Enjoy!

ESP is definitely off (he is below 40 mph) in this case. If ESP would kick in, the truck would steer to the outside of the turn to correct the perceived (by the software) fishtailing.

I was just approached by the Audi board. They had noticed on the Quattro that ESp would only kick in in oversteer (fishtailing threat) situations - not in understeer situations (heading for the ditch). Most ESP software is written to only correct oversteer since undertseer does not threaten the stability of the vehicle (but you are heading for the ditch nevertheless).

RE: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

I don't think that he's got the lockers on. I simply cannot believe that a GWagen would turn in that roundabout with that grip with the lockers on.

Anyway, talking of hilarious videos involving Mercs, here is a selection of what our Finnish fellow Mercedes diesel enthusiasts do to their older W201s, W123s and W124s... I would just love to see one of these 400+ BHP fitted to a GWagen!

The roundabout looks quite greasy, may even be icey. You could drift a wheelbarrow round there, if u wanted

Re: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

The oddity I see in the video are the G55 sidepipes.

On the car in the drift, it has the twin pipes on the left side, but nothing on the right side. At 42 seconds in, theres a nice clean shot of the side, no side pipes, but at 37 seconds, you can see them.

It either a configuration I know nothing about (most likely), or the driver really likes to beat the truck and they're torn off.

Yes there are side exhaust pipes on the right side, you can see (if you look hard) at 23 sec.. Also that growl, it must be a G55.
I think the earlier amg models had side exhaust pipes on left side only and the later models, on both sides. We discussed this recently:

Cool video thanks for sharing.

What a Dim Wit

He could have saved himself a 100K or so by going out and getting himself a 280GE 460. Same result but he would only have needed to get it above 15mph

RE: G-Class Drift Mercedes Benz--YouTube

The only way I can get my back end out is to put the center and rear diff lock in... but its too short for long distance drifts..
