ogrenutz - 4/22/2008 6:01 PM This would make a great vacation. Already cleared it with the Mrs. and she want's to go (promised a short stop in Vegas). Just have to work out the logistics of hauling the G from DC to Cali. Last time I was there, I was on FTX for two months at Ft. Irwin, compliments of Uncle Sam. It would be nice to see it under more "luxurious" circumstances. I've been unable to find a train with a car carrier that runs east/west. So, I'm thinking of renting an RV and towing the G. Anyone have a better suggestion?

Drive the G and stay at a string of "luxurious" bed & breakfasts.

At 6'7" and 260#, the thought of repeated 10 hour stints in a w460 doesn't appeal to me much.

Ah, yes, that information would change my recommendation.

Hi Tom , it looks we have two things in common
1. I have been away from the forum for a while
2. I am currently G less and one of my cars is an FJ cruiser.

I have noticed you have an LR3 and an FJ Cruiser / why have you decided to go with the LR3 to DV for off-road trip and not in the FJ ?

Reason I am asking is because i am also currently G less but i have an FJ , and it is a good off-road performer .

I would take the G over the FJ in any day and anywhere if given the choice but never the LR( whatsoever kind of LR ) over the FJ .

Shebl

Hi Shebl,

The only reason is that I've taken the FJC to DV a couple of times already but I have yet to take the LR3. Plus the LR3 is so much more comfortable on a long drive. I prefer the LR3 because the visibility is much better, its quieter, the air suspension is stiff on the highway but very soft and plush offroad. It has all the bells and whistles and as I get older I appreciate these things a bit more.

Cheers,
Tom

RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008

I have been way to busy (again) to get the Death Valley information up on my web site. Sorry! I promise to have everything in place by next weekend (9/30).

If you don't want to or can't bring your own vehicle I have located a few empty seats.

Here is a quick update:

I went to AAA this morning and picked up the Auto Club - Death Valley National Park Guide Map. If you are a member it is free, otherwise bring 5 bucks. Great map BTW

OK guys - I ordered 42 bags of qua blue 14mm marbles - that will fill about 1.5" of the bath tub's volume (not much, but its a start)
http://www.megaglass.com/c/aqua-blue-transparent-decor-marbles.html
I pay for them out of my pocket for now and will see how much I can recover from participants and donors
$50 will buy 2 bags - if you are ready to donate through paypal: adventure@4x4abc.com
If you would rather send a check: http://www.4x4abc.com/contact.html

about 180 more bags are needed to bring Marble Bath to its original glory
I'll create a project web site to restore Marble Bath

Thank you Harald for the Restoration Project.

I like to be the second member of the new Marble Bath Society - donation is in the mail!

Do we need to make a sign:

" Just take pictures & memories - but not the marbles"

RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008

we need some psychology expert advice on how to create an effective sign - DR. Phil, where are you when you are needed? - I heard about signs that some agency had put up to stop the theft of artifacts and fossils in one of the national parks - after the signs were up, the theft rate increased dramatically
Besides, since Marble Bath is within Death Valley National Park, we get into some trouble if we put up a sign - but we should do it anyway
It will take government (including environmental impact studies, feasibility studies, budget process, bidding process etc etc) 10 years to replace the marbles - by then someone may have already stolen the bath tub.

How about:

You may have lost your marbles, but none of these are yours. Please leave 'em here.

To see pics of the DV trip, probably easier to just visit this as opposed to loading up here:

Hope to see you all on the trail.
