G-Wagon vs GL450

I test drove the GL450 for about half an hour this weekend..

Overall, I thought that it was a great vehicle. I was disappointed that they called it G-Anything.
Everything on the interior was great! The ride is better than Land Rover in a heartbeat...

  • The GL450 was very quiet
  • has good acceleration
  • has a great towing capacity
  • has a great stereo system
  • the seats were very comfortable

Although I love the ride and feel of the new GL, I still think that it's a ML on steroids and does not deserve the "G" name.
The new GL has independent suspension, and does not even have 4-Wheel Drive or Diff-Locks. It's a 4-Matic (all wheel drive). There is no low gear to switch to.

All of the bumpers are a cheap plastic. There is also no protection under the chassis. Personally, I do not believe that this vehicle could last 30 minutes in many of our off-road endeavors. You couldn't even find or attach to a recovery point.

Most stock Jeeps are going to out perform this new GL on anything off-pavement. It's a great addition to the ML family, but does not deserve the "G" name.

To make it worse with the 'G' name, is that magazines and stuff are still staying that it's going to replace the G-Wagen.

Get it right!

Very well said. I also test drove one and found the interior to be too familiar to the ML.

Re: G-Wagon vs GL450

So I read that they were to offer a rear diff lock as an option, is this not the case any longer now that it is not intended to replace the G?

Well at least it is the Gelande-Licht

I think that it's supposed to represent Gelande-Lang to represent the longer length (Similar to the SDL, SEL, ect).

The GL is a modified ML.
More Luxury, bigger Body, better Air Condition, Stiffer Frame.
In Europe is is equipped with lockers ( center and rear, each 100% )

But the GL is unibody like the JGC, no frame.

I saw one sunday at the local dealer. I would love to have one for the wife. The price seems ok too.

This is what worries me...the price is "too" good. I wonder if MB has resorted to cutting corners (again!) to keep prices low. Hell, this GL450 is cheaper than Toyota Land Cruiser.

Re: G-Wagon vs GL450

I felt that the GL looked nice in person but it was way too long and too low to the ground to be properly considered a hardcore SUV, IMHO.

There is nothing like the G.

In Europe at least, an off road pack is offered as an option, and it includes low gear plus center and rear difflock. With these, the GL may qualify as a family car for me. Even with this option, it is no match for the G off-road and even on the road I preffer my G, but the GL+offroad pack may be a match for the RR.

Re: G-Wagon vs GL450

I thought it was one of the best station wagons I'd ever driven. Although even with the optional low-range, diff locks, and extra-high suspension, I would be hard pressed to consider it an off-road vehicle on the level of a G, Jeep, or even a 4x4 pickup.
