hey all. great group here and lots of valuable info - many thanks.

thought some here may be interested in seeing this 461 swb i recently got. it is definitely rare in thailand - one of only about 50 g's imported by/for the military in '96, then sold to a private buyer after the military opted for hummers instead. as far as i can tell no other reference to thai g's on this or the bw site. also rare in general i think because it has only a rear locking diff, but i could be wrong - kinda tough to find a lot of 461 specific info. any comments or background on this or similar type models would be appreciated. vin#461238270995

questions: about the only thing it needs a the moment is new tires. can anyone tell what wheel size i have - 15" or 16"? if not i will check myself this weekend when i get back there. also, what tire size would you recommend as the best fit? it has 31" (x10.5x15 i think) now - larger than stock. i want to get something that fits well - not too small, not too big - to maintain an original look and not sacrifice power/torque or add stress, so i am thinking something in the 31 or maybe 32" range. seems like most 460 guys prefer 31" bfg a/t, but this 461 could be slightly different - not sure.

input welcomed. i am sure i will have questions more q's later when in need of good parts sources to reach way over here.

cheers,

RE: thai g

thanks for the link w.james - i had not gotten into that yet. i take it one must match the vin # specific codes up to the parts list? so my wheel size should be 7jx15 - correct?

vin: R78 light alloy wheels for wide tires (с 1978)

options:
005 4604000302 005 DISC WHEEL STEEL 6JX16H2
008 4604010002 005 DISC WHEEL LIGHT METAL 7JX15 H2

by the way, the last few digits of the vin # got cut off in my previous post. full # is 46123827099597

RE: thai g

imported by/for the military

Welcome thairish and congrats on the G.

When you get back to Thailand, can you take a few more closeups of the rack?

BTW, where in Thailand? Some of the roads I used to stomp around on outside of Chiang Mai are wonderful G-wagen stuff.

RE: thai g

yup, can get u more pics of the rack later. can tell u now that it is a thule, if that helps.

i live/work in hkg but have a place in bkk as well - that is where the g is. you're right, chiang mai is badass. was just there a couple weeks ago and rented a new thai made toyota fortuner to wheel around in. it's no g, but still good nonetheless.

can you help me out on the wheel/tire questions by any chance? i guess it asked so often that nobody is interested yet in chiming in.

Thanks. It does look like a Thule now that I've studied the pictures again.

can you help me out on the wheel/tire questions by any chance?

Well, I'm not really well versed in that department compared to other members on this forum.

Those look like 31x10.5 tires on a 15 inch rim. Can't tell how wide the rims are, probably 7 inch. The width of your rim will dictate how wide you can go with tires. Your tire choice should depend on where and how you drive it.

RE: thai g

I think the VIN you provided is missing numbers...should be 17 characters(including WDB). Anyhow, I did a check on the EPC with the generic 461238 chassis and show the 255/75/r15 tire with the 7Jx15HJ wheel as available and by the looks of your photos would be the same.

By the way, I think your G looks fine just the way it is with the tires and wheels that are on it. Nice truck.

Re: thai g

many thanks for the epc info guys. yes correct, since the original message i figured out i have 31x10.5 on 15x7 rims.

mike: agree it's a good set up and plan to stick with the same. hey, like your brushguard/bullbar. original or aftermarket?

by the way, complete vin# is wdb46123827099597.

cheers,

RE: thai g

The grill guard is original equipment. Once my tires wear out I will go to 31x10.5x15 as there are 255x75x15 currently. Probably not much difference in size but more tire selection with the 31x10.5. I will probably go with the Toyo Open Country as I have got over 45000 miles on them so far on my Dodge and will probably get one more winter out of them. Keep us posted on your progress as by the looks of it you dont have much to do. Most of us here in the US would love to have a W461 chassis and are quite envious.

Also, keep a look out on German Ebay as guards come up from time time if interested, also someone has one for sale on clubgwagen.com.

Re: thai g

hey mike.

good lookin truck you have yourself. i totally lucked out finding this 461 - will miss it when/if i ever move back to the states.

the trick may be finding a grill guard to fit, as my 461 front bumper is different than your and other 460 bumpers. will check with my guy at the local dealer - he knows his stuff.

another question - about your dark window tinting. thinking about getting mine redone, but darker this time because of the year round hot hot hot tropical sun. is there a tint grade standard, or is it kinda subjective, depending on the vendor?

cheers,
dd

RE: thai g

There are tint grades, but I do not know exactly what was used. I do know the front driver/passenger door windows are 25 percent lighter while all behind is almost blackout.
As far as the grillguard, I always thought the 460/461 parts were pretty interchangeable.

Take care, Mike

RE: thai g

Thairish:

I would stick to your current size of 31"x10.5x15. The 230 GE that you own hasn't got a particularly torquey engine and if you increase the gearing you will find the truck much slower. That and the loss in brake efficiency too.

So get yourself a good pattern that satisfys the use that you want to use your G for.

The front diff lock was an option for the 461 230 GE. Obviously, your car was ordered without it.

Nice (and very rare) truck. Most 461 were diesels and just 331 230 GEs were ever made, of which just 118 were SWB hardtops.
