The rear differential on my '85 SWB is starting to leak. I know the cover gasket is old and probably knackered. I plan to renew the fluids and gaskets this holiday weekend. My question is this ... there is a leak, or what appears to be a leak, where the steel axle tube is pressed into the cast iron gear housing. Is this possible and if so, has anyone repaired this type of leak succesfully? Many thanks. I would pull the cover off and reseal it first as you plan on doing before suspecting that other area. It looks to me like the leak may be above the axle line. My two cents. I hope that does it. -Dai

Are you sure it's not a broken/loose vent tube or perhaps a leak from a shaft seal being blown back? In any case, a thorough cleaning is in order to help detect the true source. The cover doesn't show signs of a big impact, the gasket should be OK.

Verify that pathway is clear, whichever type of breather you have, and check the fluid level by opening the level plug and seeing if anything comes out. -Dave G.

I had a blast in my 463 driving at about 120/125 Km/h for two-three hours and on destination we went off-roading. At some point, I noticed that my fuel tank was covered in what appear to be diesel. I got very excited about having to drive back home in a flatbed truck with my G on it (thinking I had damaged the fuel tank) but then on close inspection, I discovered that it was transfer case oil. It must have obviously been overfilled and with the summer heat and the motorway blast must have expanded beyond the breather pipes. Oil is very scandalous and with a moderate amount it's possible the whole underneath og your G. I would clear thoroughly the area and check daily where the new oil is coming from.
