Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

I noticed thanks to people here telling me what to look for dealing with shifting issues, that the rubber grommets on the shifting arms of the trans may be worn out.
Well they are big time.
Sooo I ordered 2 sets from Sean.
Well decided to install them yesterday.
Turns out that at least on my 1980 230g that they are not the correct ones. Mine seem to be the reverse. Instead of a groove in the middle mine should have a raised part in the middle

if that makes sence to anyone
part #s are correct but part is wrong any ideas ? ? ?

Thanks
Rick

RE: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

Curious....

Which one's wrong, the little ones, the big ones, or both?  What transmission do you have?  Can you send a picture of the old bushing next to the new one, and a picture of the offending metal parts that the grommets don't fit into?

I can not get the old ones out they eithe have been there a LONG time or are glued in place. These are the three shift levers on the 4 speed trans. I will look and see if I can get any #s off the trans and I will try to remove one but if I break is I am SOL for driving it..

Re: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

My suspicion is that the ones you have are correct, just look different in place than in your hand.  Maybe some portion of those in place have rotted away or something.  Once the trans rod is out, try making a radial cut from center hole to edge through the rubber to ease removal.  That will also allow you to re-insert and use them if need be.  But I suspect you'll find your spares will fit.

Worst case, remove the bushing for the reverse gear if you have a way to drive without using reverse, or remove the 1/2 bushing as you can always start out in 3rd gear low range and then switch to 2wd hi.

Re: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

I am going to go a step frother and remove the arm from the trans so that I can see it close up that way if it works great if not then I can fix it better or never remove the old one first...

RE: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

Mark arm position before removing it from shaft.
Earlier 4speed transmission had different types of bushings PRESSED to the arm.

Re: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

When I replaced them I thought I bought them from my local MB dealer, They said they are used on a lot of different cars. I bought the whole ends metal and interior grommets and they were cheap less than 15.00 for all of them.
Good luck

Re: Trans Shifting Rubber Grommet Issue

That's a great idea.  Post us a pic if you can!

It may be possible that an old style grommet has been superseeded in the MB parts stock by a new style grommet.  It may very well be a case where the old one looks different from the new one, but both work just fine.

The part # has changed to the new part # but they are a different part. Rather odd but hey nothing about my G has been normal..
Will keep working on it..
