Hello,
I'm new to this forum and have a question about a 91 280GEL,auto, AMG trim, 100000Km.
The asking price is Can$28000.
It seems the vehicle has been imported from Japan, excelent condition.
I have the following questions:
What gas mileage can I expect?
Any known issues with these vehicles?
What's the value?
Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Otto

ps: my toy is a '83 380sl (sweeeet)

Re: '91 280GEL

Are you located in Canada too?--Or what I am trying to say is that I hope you are not in the U.S. trying to bring that vehicle over from Canada. The reason is that you would be paying more than your CAN$28,000.

Re: '91 280GEL

You will need to include that location in your profile in case you have future questions about your G. That way a fellow Canadian can better assist you with your needs. If I recall correctly, there is someone in your area with the same first name as you who is a G enthusiast. His contact information can be found on clubgwagen.com.

Do you have any pictures? CAN$28,000 sounds pretty reasonable for a 1991 AMG G. I think there was a 1990 or 1991 LWB G that recently sold on eBay for approx US$25000. And this was not an AMG.

Re: '91 280GEL

Nevermind about the first name thing. I was thinking of Roland Otterstein. He is from Vancouver area.

AMG 280GEL? I did not think AMG badged (or designated) their model numbers like that. Their numbers are usually G36, G55, etc. It sounds like this might be a regular 280GEL with AMG accessories (i.e. wheels, badges, spare tire cover, etc.), but not an AMG. We will definitely need to see pictures.

Hello OWC

are you shure about a 1991 280GEL? To my knowledge the 280 GE wasn't built at that time!

The "Legend" book shows the LWB 280GE (460.233) was built through 1991. Also, a vehicle made in a given year but registered later in another country will often be dated by the later registration. Europa International was registering early 1999 G500's as "2000 G500"; and that happened frequently throughout the years of production.

AMG modified early G's without changing the model designation.

Re: '91 280GEL

I know there were some early 90s 230 GEs, but never heard about such 280.
One AMG 280 GEL is right now for sale on mobile.de.

RE: '91 280GEL

28,000$ CDN seems ok. I recently , purchased a 1990 289 GE, for 25,000$ CDN. Although I had to make some repairs I'm happy, my truck is soild with no rust. I think I've seen pictures of the truck in question, looks like 280GE with AMG badging. www.risingsunimports.com.

AMG G-Wagons

As you can tell from the PDF that I have attached from EPC, there were numerous badged AMG G-Wagons

Thanks for the info so far, but can anyone tell me about the mileage of this vehicle? It'll be my daily driver, is it going to leave me broke??
Thanks,
Otto

Re: '91 280GEL

I put the price(still without tax) into a currency converter, and the result was more than 20000 Euro. That is about double of the price of such car in Europe. Is it so expensive to make it road legal in Canada or what is the reason of such a high price?

RE: '91 280GEL

My G gets about the same mileage as my full size dodge ramcharger 5.2 L did. The G is really heavy, geared like a tractor, areodynamic like a snow plow, and that motor was designed when gas was cheap. So if you plan on driving alot of freeway be prepared for 10-15 mpg.. (That being imperial gallons not US). Also don't expect any kind of performance like a V8 motor would, think VW bus = gutless up hill.

Re: '91 280GEL

Luky, any auto 15yrs old or older can be imported into Canada with just an inspection. My G is the way it was from the factory, road legal. The price of this G is high because it is low km and probally no rust also it had to cross the Pacific on a ship. My 1990 280 GE was 25,000 cdn. and worth every penny. Not one spot of rust 55,000km (not even wear on the carpet) The truck most likely never left Tokyo. Japan has the best used cars in the world. It costs so much to have a car there that they don't drive much and really take care of them. The government in Japan highly regulates cars and inpections. After a few years it's cheaper to buy a new car then keep the old one licensed. Their loss is our gain here Canada!

Re: '91 280GEL

I went to the risingsunimports.ca site and saw the G you are interested in. It looks nice and clean. Is the G already in BC? If so, I recommend seeing it in person. Interesting buttons near the armrests of the seats.

Does that CAN$28,000 include the shipping? How much is GST on a vehicle like that these days in BC?

Hi,
the price is the landed cost plus 7% tax.
That gas mileage is a killer!!!!!
Maybe I'll have to look at the Toyota VX they have. Straight six td, electric diff locks @ both ends, 118000km, $21000. Not a MB, but probably a good vehicle. Does anyone know how they compare (asde from the VX being right hand drive)?
Tx,
Otto

RE: '91 280GEL

Otto ,the toyota is built like a tin can and the G is like a bank vault! Your comparing apples to oranges with gas and diesel. The toy with it's diesel engine would win when it comes to mileage. Off road performance the G would win hands down. That's why militaries around the world use them. However if you still go with the diesel toy beaware some parts may be not available in Canada. Even through the dealerships. Some models were sold here in 80's with diesels, but they might be different motors. I know a guy that was having hard time to get an oil filter for his imported toyota; I'm not sure of year though. Also some toys were 24volts. I think pre 1988. Imagine trying to find a 24v starter, alt. or even a headlamp bulb. G parts are available from many sources. Even MB will help. Though they not cheap and you have to wait some times.

I am new here and I do not mean to hijack another thread, but I am interested in your experience in the importing from japan. Which importer did you use terra2 or j-spec? I am considering doing this as well.
