steering wheel size?

My 280GE's former owner had changed the steering wheel to smaller size, 14 inch diameter. I can't see gauges and I could use more leverage offroad. What size diameter and dishing did they originally come with?

RE: steering wheel size?

A w126 or w123 car of your same year should have the same steering wheel...if I am not mistaken up untill 1986 when the sedans went to a smaller wheel. I can look up part number if you would like but probably much cheaper going to a dismantler.

RE: steering wheel size?

Thanks for the part number offer, but it's the size I need. There is an after market steering wheel of some type in there now; 14 inch diameter. I will replace with another aftermarket but I would like to get as close to stock size as possible. That way steering effort will be same as stock and i will be able to see gauges also.

Please put the model year of your 280GE in your profile. Different sizes were used in different years as the power steering system changed.

Then the steering wheel is that of a contemporary W124 sedan (1986-1991)

RE: steering wheel size?

Lots of people with G's no one with tape measure or ruler? I want to buy aftermarket sterring wheel to replace small one that came in my truck. The sedan may have the same steering wheel but I don't have a sedan to measure it and I'm not buying one (wheel) to measure it.

Sorry but I don't get it.

If you want to buy an aftermarket steering wheel go there and buy yourself whichever suits you best, with whatever diameter you think is most appropiate for your needs.

In the 460 the steering wheel was notorious for obscuring the view of the top of the speedometer and rev counter. So there you go. No matter what the original diameter is, you'll still be in trouble.

FYI, my steering wheel is 40 cms in diameter but my G is a 1991 463 and the wheel comes from a 1993 W201 190E 1.8. So there you go. Not very helpful, isn't it?

RE: steering wheel size?

Mortinson, thanks for taking the trouble to measure your wheel, but I don't understand what you don't get about my question. If you read my original post, I was wanting to find size of the 'orginial' steering wheel that came with my G; so I may buy aftermarket same size to replace 14inch aftermarket which is in my truck now. I figured that if others measured their wheels I could find out. Therefore by staying with the stock size I would regain the orginial steering characteristics of my truck, and possibly see my guages. So far I have had a little help: info earlier in one post that size may depend on year or model (helpful info), in another reply I had the offer of part #'s (no help), one fellow gave me measurement of 16.5 inches (very helpful, even though different year same 460 chassis). Your info about sedan wheels, though I appreciate the reply was not helpful to me sorry. My request was for measurement of diameter and dish offset. Even though 463 is not same as 460, knowing that it came with 40cm (15+inch wheel) helps, though you may not think so. thanks Bern.
