Instrument Cluster

When I last removed the Instrument Cluster on my G-Wagon (to replace a bulb), I noticed that it had 126 part numbers. I am interested to know if the Instrument Clusters are in any way interchangeable?

I would like to have the older style readout with oil pressure readout. I find the digital displays less reliable and lack the information when I want it. I cannot even display the oil pressure in any way...

RE: Instrument Cluster

I gather that you are referring to the cluster in your G320 which would posibly be a Europa imported G-Wagen. I gather therefore that they installed a miles speedo to comply with the federalisation requirements. This is because in all the pre-2000 463 G-Wagens I have seen, both in the UK and in continental Europe, I remember that the part number of the speedo started invariably with 463.

If I am right, your W126 speedo is already a modification.

Can you share the part number. I am sure that if need be it would be much cheaper to source a replacement speedo if it comes from a W126.

RE: Instrument Cluster

What is the manufacture date of your truck? The 96 diesels had a W210 based cluster (marked 463). As I understand it, the 96 gas trucks had the older instrument cluster. With the next year (or maybe it was the next engine upgrade?) the gas trucks also switched to the W210 based cluster.

As far as interchangeability goes, the cluster in my truck had 463 stamped on it and it appeared to be the original. Presumably the speedo background had been replaced and then it had been recoded with the HHT. The temp gauge still showed temperature in C. The dealer was able to switch that for me.

The 126 speedos have far less digital gimmicry and might be easy to interchange. Perhaps you could get a junkyard speedo for a test? It is unlikely to harm your truck.

Note: I have heard that some of the engine computers record mileage internally and compare that to the instrument cluster. Whichever is higher is retained when there is a discrepancy. You might want to be careful with a higher mileage odometer.

Mine was stamped off the assembly line 12/96. It has the M104 engine.
