I noticed a nice looking G on ebay.

Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1985-280GE-4dr-LWB-with-special-fact...

Has anyone seen this G before or can say a little more about it. It has been offered in the past but does not apper to be a Europa import.

Also: Since the engine requires work: Who would know how much a rebuilt engine would cost?

Thanks for your help.

Rebuilt engine is probably not necessary. Valve Guide Seals is my guess. It's pretty common on that engine. The smoke on startup is the diagnosing symptom.

RE: G280 with engine burning oil

I just had my top end rebuilt on my '84 280. They were able to save the valves, but put in new guides and macheined everything and new H2o pump and all the necessaries involved w/ a top end. All told it cost around $4000 ( Oh yeah ther were two rear brake cylinders invloved in that price also, so subtract 5 or 6 hundred from that w/ labor and such). As long as the rings are still good, a top end fix should do it. You may be able to get a better price, as I said there were a lot of items I had replaced while they had it torn appart. The kind of things athat may not be necessary, but inevitably break a few hundred miles after you get it all back to gether and with you had fixed to begin with.

Where do you live...I have a couple of 280 engines from conversions
Much cheaper than a rebuild. They are good motors and are complete
with fuel distributors, one new, and ign. modules etc.

RE: G280 with engine burning oil

If you're in the US (please fillout profile!) you can get a remanufactured head here: for under $1,000:

http://www.mercedesengines.net/proddetail.asp?prod=280

This will probably involve about 8-10 hrs labor at shop rate to exchange this part for the corresponding unit in your G.  This is why it's hardly ever the financially responsible thing to have a local shop do rebuilding and machinine work on engines.  Someone who's set up to do it on a regular basis can do it much more cost effectively than the local guy charging you $100 an hour to do all the work.

That said, I'm about to give my local guy $500 to rebuild the head on my 617A, and that's only for new guides and seals, and the valve & seat machining work.  If I went the $800 for a head from Metric, I'd be getting new valves and springs too......This one wasn't an easy decision for me, but I'm on a tight budget in this rebuild and couldn't afford the extra $.  That and I have experience with cars that this guy has done this kind of work on and I know he does a good job.  Known quality of work is a factor too.

Good luck!
