Corrosion protection for alignment adjusters?

About a year ago, I finally set the alignment on my 96. This was quite an ordeal as the adjusters were firmly corroded from 6 years of German salt. Breaking the pieces loose took 4' pipe wrenches and an enourmous bench vice, not to mention solvents. Upon reassembly I slathered every moving part with anti-seize (silver Permatex). So far, so good.

Yesterday I decided to do some fine tuning on the alignment. The adjusters were frozen again. Not quite as bad, but large pipe wrenches are required. This time I scrubbed and reassembled with waterproof front wheel bearing grease.

What is the most appropriate goop to use? I really don't want to do this again. It would really suck to bend something on the trail and not be able to adjust for the bend.

RE: Corrosion protection for alignment adjusters?

I like Never Seez made by Bostik, but I havn't tried it on the adjusters yet. However I have had good luck with on wheel nuts. I bought a big can 15 yrs ago, after having to torch nuts off alloy rims on my dakota when I lived in eastern Canada. (bad winters with alot of road salt) I couldn't get them off with 3/4 drive impact driver, some studs broke some got torched. Nuts where ball seat type. I never had trouble again after using the Never Seez so I've been dabing it everwhere since. I'm not sure if it's still available so here's the ingredients also, maybe you can get something similar.

Thanks for the tip

I'll try to look for the stuff. Certainly the Permatex anti-seize was near useless.

Re: Corrosion protection for alignment adjusters?

I work in a Kraft Pulp Mill, anywhere that fasteners may come into contact with salt (mostly Sodium Sulfate in our process) we apply Loctite 767.

In my opinon areas such as Vent Gas systems, Ash Conveyors and Recrystalisation are among the most corrosive on the planet - I have never found a seized thread where Loctite 767 has been used.

Thanks for that tip. Where I live that plant in your photo would be Poison Oak...

Well spotted. I've spent a little bit of time along the coast up there in Oregon, in my opinion it's one of the nicest places in the USA - beautiful scenery with nice people.

Next time you are on the coast here stop by, the farm is 45 miles inland from Newport OR. I will be on the hunt for Loctite 767 this week.

Cheers,

RE: Corrosion protection for alignment adjusters?

I swear by Never Seez too, my can is probably only about 8 years old though. Shouldn't be a problem to find,Bostik.com

The other thing that can work well too is to use loctite (purple, blue, green), all of these will seal up the threads from corrosion in addition to the loctiting action, so things will be difficultish but not super difficult to get apart.  Stay away from the red stuff though because that normally requires heat to get apart later.

A bit of loctite trivia I just found out the other day:  I bought a little bottle from a machinery supplier rather than the tiny tubes I usually get from the auto parts or hardware store and noticed something, on the bottle there was a use by date (two years out) and it said to shake well before using, the little tubes mention neither of these things although they appear to be the exact same formulation.
