Roof rail corner joint...hole?

Hello all. In my efforts to find the "wind noise" that has been haunting me, I happened to role down my window and slide my hand along the rail and noticed that there was a hole or gap in the molding at the corner joint....which appears like it could be the culprit.

My question is: Is there suppose to be a gap like in the attached photo ? It appears like it had some "rubber compound" of some sort at one time.
I question this as to whether it is open for some sort of drainage but I dont have the luxury of looking at another W460 in my parts to compare, so I was hoping someone would check theirs to see if it looks the same or if it is "filled".

Thanks, Mike

it's very possible that's the culprit. The newer ones come with a shroud over that area (from top to bottom of the wind shield) which i've never heard does anything but address wind noise... maybe it looks cooler with the shroud.

Mine is the same - no rubber compound and no noise. However it appears you have the later superceeded end pieces for the rubber strip along the top of the windscreen - perhaps these are making a noise as you really cant get these end pieces to fit properly.

Thanks for the thoughts. On the underside of the "hole" you can see a factory rubber-like putty to cover up the joint but looks age-worn. My theory is wind comes through the hole as pictured and "whistles" through the smalles crack in the "putty" and on through the door jam which you would hear either through the door rubber or ??

I will keep you posted with my findings....with my luck it could turn out to be my roof rack.

Here's some pics of mine. There seems to be putty in bottom but not too far up the inner side of the rail.

Well after an afternoon of test drives with tape in various places, my original thoughts were wrong and I think now it maybe the window rail molding that window "fits" into upon being rolled up in particular the top portion....but still not certain. I guess i will have to order up one and take a gamble. Sometimes I hate being so anal about squeeks, rattles and leaks. Thanks guys for you photos and thoughts.

Re: Roof rail corner joint...hole?

Consider also replacing the door seals. If theyre that old it can make for a fair amount of noise just by air being able to slip into the crack. My right rear door seems to get a bit more wind noise but it's far away enough from me that i almost never notice it. It might mute the sound just by better insulating from the outside. People have said their doors regain the nice thud on closing them after refreshing old door seals.

Interestingly, i was one sitting in my car in a snow storm, with it positioned just so that i could actually watch the tiniest little flakes of snow bypassing my door seal at the front upper corner of the door seal, closest to the windshield/roof. Beautiful but a little unsettling.
