It is possible there is piston damage as well, because when the timing chain breaks the pistons will hit the valves. The motor stopped fast because the clearances are very tight. If it was idleing at the time the damage might not be too severe. Pull the head off and have a look in there. I hope the damage isn't too bad. Best of luck, -Dai

Chain elongation should be checked by inspecting cam sprocket. Look for a damaged tooth at the tip, then count seven teeth to the right and you will find another damaged tooth. If this is the case, chain is stretched. Cheers Warren

Over 100,000 miles? Do you do a lot of short trips. And, you do your periodic value clearance checks? I suspect that you have over 100,000 miles on this timing chain, perhaps much more. I have a firm belief that all MB timing chains need to be changed every 90,000 or so miles. I change those in gas and diesel vehicles that I have owned. The run better with a fresh timing chain, and I have a greater sense of peace of mind knowing that it I have done all that I can to keep parts from meeting each other when they should not. Good luck with the repair. Sorry to hear of your troubles.

stevieboyessex Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | timing chain We had the belts go on our Audi, ( yes I know we should have had them done at the 60000 service ,we were only a 1000 over this and snap ). When the breakdown guy came to pick us up, I told him they went just as we were pulling off from traffic lights, so damage should n,t be to bad, his comment was that it doesn,t matter if your doing 10mph or 90mph damage will be the same. He was right everyone of the 20 valves bent or snapped. Hope i,m wrong in your case though.

This suggests that it was not harmed much, and if you only could spin the engine with the started, it likely did no or little harm. I would think that if the chair just jumped a few teeth it might stop the engine but not do much damage. A valve would eventually come into contact with a piston and make everything halt - stop. I have had this happen on a gasoline MB engine in the 1970's. It did no damage, but the engine was stuck with a value and piston stopping all motion. It was running at ideal when it happened. A diesel has more torque and depending upon what happeded to the timeing chair - complete failure vs. tension failure and skipping a tooth or two. Is the timing chain still on the cam shaft sproket? This could be a good sign. Tom
