Leaking Tranny Fluid

My vehicle has always leaked a bit of pink transmission fluid. My mechanic who services the vehicle looked at it and said it has something to do with when the car was federalized and the speedo/tach runs into the gearbox (I could have misunderstood). Anyways, I'm starting to get a collection of fluid on the floor under the vehicle from since I have purchased the vehicle and it causes some concern. Last time I had the car in, 2 weeks ago, I asked him to look at it and flush/replace the fluid if need be. He doesnt seem to think it is a real problem or perhaps something easily fixed. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

On an 85, the speedo cable goes into the transfer case, not the gearbox. The transfer case had better have gear oil and not ATF in it. If you're leaking pink fluid, it's not related to the speedo; unless someone has put ATF where it doesn't belong.

RE: Leaking Tranny Fluid

Adoni,

If your mechanic is a seasoned MB mechanic, he is used to seeing the speedo drive attached to the rear of the auto gearbox. As Dutch mentioned, the drive on the G is attached to the t-case and that is probably why your mechanic thought it had been moved during Federalization.

On the W460, there is actually a plug and an o-ring on the back of the auto transmission where the drive would normally be for the cars. See diagram below.  The plugs are sometimes cracked or the o-rings are bad and this causes the leak.

If you find this to be the culprit, we have both parts on the shelf.

Re: Leaking Tranny Fluid

Hey guys. Thanks for the information. I noticed the same thing a couple days ago on my '82 280GE as I was cleaning up the garage in our new house in Oklahoma City. The leak is not bad (yet). The drops are very small. I take it this pink ATF is almost oderless compared to smells of other fluids (i.e. oil, anti-F, etc.). I am going to go under and have a better look with my lamp.

Other than the O-ring and plug (parts 132 and 135), are there any other possibilities to look out for?

Re: Leaking Tranny Fluid

G,,day ,my 84 had the leaky oring, but also leaking from around the spacer that the output shaft seal fits into .easy to miss as you just expect it to be the seal . so if replacing the output shaft seal do the oring on the spacer as well, cheers kerry

Re: Leaking Tranny Fluid

Looks like I'll be ordering the whole deal and just replacing it, I've always believed overkill eventually pays for itself. I'd rather not have the vehicle leak at all. I think I'll also be replacing my 6 blade fan with a 9 blade fan.
