RE: Seeking Advice about land rover

Yes, if we made rational decisions and followed J.D. Power and Associates, we'd all be driving Toyota Landcruisers...

Would you compare any Ford to any Mercedes?

Ford GT vs..... ??? SLR? For the performance, I'd take the GT.

An engineer called Starley of Sturmy Archer Coventry was acredited with inventing the differential.

RE: Seeking Advice about land rover

I like landroversonly.com they are great people, and you won't get blasted for asking questions. At Discoweb.org there are many people that are A$$holes!!!!!
--Now I have never owned a G,(yet) I have driven several, and took one on a trip as well. I have however owned a 1983 300D mercedes for 6 years!(increadable car, and easy to find parts!!) I have owned a LR for the past 5 years, and I like them alot. Yes they are not nearly as "stout" as a G, but IMHO, in their stock form, they are more agile, and can flex more than any G. There are many more mods out there for LR, given that they are cheaper and easier to mod and maintain. In these 5years of ownership, I have spent only $2000.00 in parts on my LR's. I do 99% of all my work.*****NOW THIS IS FOR LAND ROVERS PRIOR TO 1999, AND 460 G'S.*****

LR has increased their quality over the past years, and having the money I would buy a new one. HOWEVER if it was up against a G500 2004 and up compared to a RR 2007 I would by all means get the G500! You can not compare a G500 to a RR in any way. Granted the RR is probably more comfortable, but it just doesn't compare.

The simple fact for me, is it is far cheaper to buy, mod, and maintain any 2000 or under LR, than to buy a G.
G's are fore most more expensive to purchase, harder to find mods(what little you would need, mostly springs for lift/flex), and most of all hard to find parts, and fix!

I have always wanted, and will buy a G. I found a great 85 300 GD LWB, in my "backyard" but it is just way to expensive to purchase. It is just not worth the asking price. But one day he will let it go for the right price and I will finaly get the one I want. Since the engine and transmission is the same as my 300D, it will be the perfect addition to my obsession!

Think you will find that some called Richard Roberts was more likely Welsh. A rather important distinction

If your uses are mainly to be off road, visit Bill Burke's "4wheeling america" web site.  A lot of his stuff is couched in a LR point of view and you can't go wrong spending some time with Bill no matter what you drive.  He should be getting back from his anual new years run in Utah....time to see if anyone has any pix yet....

-Dave G.

Dave, since you didn't stipulate "good" pix...yes. Album created.

Unfortunately we only got to participate in two of the five days of the outing this year...my heater core bit the dust. But I'll second your comment about Bill.

We had a good mix of vehicles as expected, with a couple of Defenders, Discos, Jeeps, a Land Cruiser, an Xterra, and the 300GD. It seemed the other participants were a bit surprised by the capabilities of what at first glance appeared to be a very mildly set up (if not antiquated) rig. The G climbed right over everything put before it. It even surprised me a little, to tell the truth, but I did have expert spotting over the tougher obstacles.
