Roughneck,
I like the side view mirrow on the back door of that G! Where is that photo from?
Is the mirror so guys in the back can see the enemy sneaking up?
Jonathan

The mirrors where for a couple of things, one you have identified, the other is more covert, search another thread, Missing G Found to learn more, and google " BRIXMIS" to learn even more.

Word of Caution

What you cannot control, when fording, is the Queen Mary sized bow wave coming at you from the 18 wheeler going the other way. that can really spoil your plan

Bill, where do you get the information that you can flood the intake system without pulling water into the engine?  Maybe I'm mistaking your intention, but it sounded like that's what you were saying with the comment that the engine will stop due to lack of air before it ingests water.  I've never seen that claim made anywhere before, nor heard of it being tested.

If the air box is intact, properley fitted and the end seal on the filter cartridge not damaged, and all assembled correctly water will not pass thru the filter and the engine will stall.
Tests done at KHD in 1988/89 to ascertain wether NATO operated Gs of the day required sealed /raised intake units or cyclonic filters for extreme winter conditions, the standard intake was found to be more than adequate.
The air intake system on the 460 range is one of the best sytems standard I have seen, out side of oil baths.
The 463 intake systems I have examined I wouldnt even consider suitable for traversing a mill pond.
I am not advocating that we should all get out there and practice river crossing, but for 24 inches of street flood you should have no fear, the full technique of driving in such conditions should not be taken lightly, eg, if you do meet an 18 wheeler take your foot off the pedal before the wave hits, that way you limit the risk of ingestion. same technique in desert when approaching vehicle passes, The perfect bow wave, creating an air pocket around your engine, takes skill and practice and can only be done at limited depths,
The only time I used roof height snorkels was in extreme dust conditions.

Roughneck,
Do you consider the alternator snorkel essential for fjording up to 24 inches? Needless to say driving style is probably the most important factor in any case.

Not unless you intend speding all your time on the salt flats or up the pan handle around Kantara. the air intake is well forward and shielded so doesnt take hot air out of the engine bay.

I wouldnt say it is essential, just take it easy, drive slow but keep revs high. ie 2nd gear. attached you can see the result of over enthusiastic fording,
1st mistake ,in to deep and panicked.
2nd mistake, reversed out at high speed filling engine bay with water which bent the fan and broke off one blade damaging the radiator.
