Having first purchased my first G, an '84 4 spd manual, what sort of upgrades can I do to this car to increase the performance? Initally, diesel engine swap was in my mind, but I think it's too much hassle and I decided to optimize the existing engine. Right now, I'm converting the 4 spd to 5 spd and change the final gear? I will update soon on the progress...Thanks Chris

People are able to give much better assistance to you, if they know you're located in Indonesia, as opposed to the US or Europe. Best thing that can be done for that engine is to switch the head, cam and pistons to the high compression versions as used in the European sedans. It'll raise you from 150 SAE HP to about 185 SAE HP.

However, when I took it to Utah and got above 5,000 ft, a little more umph would have been very useful. I think that Dave (hipine) is seeing that already with his turbo diesel switch.

Any good MB engine rebuilder can do this for you; and they'll also have all the part numbers, etc.

I did it by getting a factory rebuild in exchange for the old G 280, the supplier just swapped a few digits around, he wasnt concerned as he says it will get rebuilt as a hi comp any way. the only problem I had was getting rid of the heat, on a long drive to Munich once I melted the sole of my welly boot, retarded the ignition just a smidge seemed to help. good luck, its the way to go, oh take out the centre silencer on the exhaust system to improve gas flow and it will sound like an AMG 500. if your funds run to it have a complete silencer made from SS and ending just before the rear wheel with a one box silencer under the pax side well, now it will sound like a Ferrari.
