Re: G420 CDI coming soon?

I was having a bit of fun with wordplay, the G320 CDI is completely unavailable at this time in the US, EVEN as a special order. I've tried pretty much everything short of buying one in Europe and having it federalized which would probably end up costing me somewhere in the range of 130k by the time I'm done paying for a G320 at Euro prices with the damn exchange rate and sending the car to a conversion center, not to mention the bureaucratic mess that would be getting it registered in another state for 7500 miles before transferring title to myself in California. my best bet would be if my dealer could get one in the US through their Reno store, and then sell it to me as a 7500 mile demo vehicle. But as I said, MB will not be shipping any G320 CDI's to this shore via the factory...

Forget the G320CDI - it will probably never come to the states. Focus your attention on the next best thing: the redesigned Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.

Sadly, I think Adoni is right...I don't see the dealership network bringing the 320CDI in because of the better profit margin from the gas models. DC has become pretty much focused on volume and maximizing the bottom line. I think the only way 320CDI's will enter the US is through the grey market.

If you want one that bad a $130K is not that much money. A G55K is a $115K

The problem would be when it has issues where do you get it fixed?

Just for my information, how much does it cost to federalize a G?

Re: G420 CDI coming soon?

The thing is Kerr, 130k isn't that much when compared to buying say, an SL55 or a CL600 etc. etc., the problem comes when you justify to yourself the type of wear and tear you are going to subject the vehicle to. The dents, dings scrapes, mud, snow, animal mess, fishing hooks, gun barrels, duck/deer/ insert other animal here blood, ski tips, ski boots. I grew up in a household where there was a distinct difference between what was the "nice" car and what was the "utility" car. My father is a serious offender when it comes to this, he is very honest about the fact that while he likes his vehicles to be clean, they are still cars and he buys them for a purpose, but you hate to spend an extra 50k over sticker to do those things to a vehicle. I don't think either of us or my brother has owned a vehicle that didn't have some sort of questionable stain in the cargo area or bed when we sold it...

Sometimes it is not profit a company looks at in a low volume car, but positive PR and improved CAFE standards. I still expect the G320CDI to make it to the U.S., but dought the G420CDI (which is the one I would want). MB is pushing the diesel engines as their 'better' alternative to hybrids ... just my opinion

Re: G420 CDI coming soon?

Personally... I do not think that I would purchase a grey markey G320cdi.
There are too much electronics and they are getting too complex. If the dealership will not work on it, nobody can. None of the smaller shops have the equipment nor the know-how to work on these engines.

Re: G420 CDI coming soon?

on the note of the simple 320CDI and a Fully loaded 420CDI, this is what they did before in europe. the G270CDI came as a standard g, i dont mean bare metal but without the nav etc, whereas the 400CDI came as loaded as the 500, which is why a GWOA member bought one over the petrol.

As for the charges, thats a lot, but also think, if our mayor has his way, it will cost £25 a day (thats nearly $50) just to drive in london soon!

I did consider this alternative when DC said they were contemplating a Wrangler Unlimited with a CDI engine. However, my Jeep dealer said plans for the diesel engine were scrapped for the US market. Jeep will be selling a diesel unlimited abroad, just not in the US. Another blown opportunity. Thanks DC!

MB sure isn't pushing their diesels out West as a more efficient alternative...And ULSD is supposed to be on sale now...

Hell, just bring it and I'll find a way to buy it at whatever outrageous price they will most likely charge for it. Hopefully it will be more reliable than the G400 CDI.

What's wrong with the 400? I've always wanted one, but now.....
