Helphos suction windscreen spotlight

I just won a bid on Ebay for the Helphos spotlight which I want to mount on my G. I have obtained mounting instructions by which I have a question for you chemists here.

When mounting the suction rubber piece, it calls for a thin layer of GLYCERINE around the rubber. you then aplly with pressure to windscreen and evacuate with levers and creat a vaccuum.

My question is: What is the purpose of GLYCERINE and can it be bought "over the counter" ? If not is there a substitute ? My assumption is that it keeps the rubber pliable for the contracting windshield in temperature changes.

Any help or suggestions on mounting is appreciated.

Mike

I'll wager that it is serving a sealant. Soapy water, Vasalene should work just as well.

Cool find, Mike. Are you moonlighting as a pizza delivery guy?

Thanks Alan...Martin with as slow as the G is, the spotlight will help me find addresses faster that way I dont have to buy back so many pizzas that go past the 30 minute guarantee.

You should be able to find glycerine at a local pharmacy. Rubber grease by Girling might do the job. Is that the only Helphos unit in the US? Well done!

Thanks Dai, I will try the drug store, it just seemed like something that would have been banned in the USA by the FDA or ATF. I have seen a couple on US wagens that were listed on Ebay last year, thats what sparked my interest along with the listing in the EPC.

Just kidding about pizza delivery Mike ...

Do you have a front view shot of the light? Also what wattage bulb can you put in there? It seems close to the windshield and the w/s has a piece of plastic between the two layers of glass.

RE: Helphos suction windscreen spotlight

The picture I found on the "net". Here is an ebay listing that better describes and you can probably figure out how it works by looking. The bulb is a 12v 31w...which I have a feeling I will have a hard time finding.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=014&ssp...

The spotlight that came on the G-wagen was a Hella which was part number A0008200873 and i think looked the attached photo here....it works the same way. I hope to give the G that "rallye" feel.....yeah right.

Jelly / Jello. Jelly beans, Jelly babies, washing up liquid and lip stick are all made from Glycerine which is an animal by product, I should smear a thin film of washing up liquid, it is to aid the initial seal, Vaseline is petroleum based and may degrade the rubber.

Mike, I think also 'Parker O-Ring' lube would be appropriate - a standard of the industry..

Is not O ring lube a silicone lubricant and therefore may be counter productive in this case ?

I thought 'Helphos' and a '.........' had the same idea - looking for a tight seal

RE: Helphos suction windscreen spotlight

Looks like I have my work cut out for me to see which lube/soap is best....for all I know I may have other problems to tend to on the light or a bad rubber and end up using two sided tape. I will wait till I get it from the UK.
Thanks for your ideas and suggestions..

Glycerin aka Glycerol

I'm sure that's recommended because it's infinitely soluble in water, and will clean off the glass very easily. I sure wouldn't use silicone grease on my windshield!
