water ingress finally solved!!

here's A pic of where the water has slowly been entering both sides of my beloved G!

BUT WHAT IS IT??

Looks like a spacer/ mount for the front wing to firewall connection..???

is this common,or just my luck!!

IMHO, it's common. I have the same problem on my cabrio, although not as bad as your photo indicates. If the water is getting in, then check under the floor mats where the body mounts to the frame. Water tends to collect there and will eventually rot the stiffener bracket. I'm replacing the stiffener bracket on my cabrio along with a new floorboard that I fabricated.

I took these photos a couple weeks ago for my restoration collection of "before and after". They represent the condition of the vehicle as I received it complete with dodgy repairs by the previous owner(s).

To remove the wings (fenders), I had to heat the two bolts/nuts that are on the bulkhead with a torch to a dull red in order to remove the nuts. Removing the wings exposes the bulkhead and will allow easy access to repair/replace the affected rusty sheetmetal. Fortunately, the sheetmetal is relatively flat and easy to replicate for a replacement panel.

Martin is right on the money with his assessment of the situation. That is a common are of rot caused by the salt, dirt and muck kicked back of your front tires. Similarly, you have many G’s showing rot at the rear corners.

When I purchased my G it had the same problem on both sides of my fire wall; somewhat worse than you show. I also had the fenders removed, cut out the rotting sections of the firewall, welded in new sheet metal, and covered the new weld with 3M undercoating.

YOU SHOULD NOT LET THIS GO. The water settles in your floor and causes rot there (as shown). The problem with that is there is a large bolts on both sides of that part of the front floor that mount the chassis to the frame. If you get rot in the area of the bolt, it will threaten the integrity of your entire chassis. A good collision with that area being rotted would not be pretty.

thanks martin for your help and detailed photos.
my floorplan is completely rust free and the rubber flooring mats were removed months ago.i count myself very lucky asthe previous owner always garaged it and seldom washed it!!
but now i know what the problem is i will have it fixed asap.
