Daimler Chrysler Woes

Have you guys been following the latest press about Daimler Chrysler considering dumping Chrysler? The company is bleeding a bit and considering getting rid of some dead weight.

GM is interested because it would make them the largest automobile company in the world. This title has recently been captured by Toyota.

Will be interesting if this shakes out at all and if so will it change things for the better?

Your thoughts?

RE: Daimler Chrysler Woes

I have seen the headlines of late. Seems the laggards are having problems. I believe the goal should not be the largest company, but to build the most reliable product. If you get to the top by doing that; being the biggest is gravy. I want to scream when I hear " We are the biggest company." Who cares! Build me something that doesn't rattle and fall apart

Re: Daimler Chrysler Woes

I think GM is insane for wanting to still be the biggest automaker, they should instead focus on being a quality automaker. If GM starts building beautiful, reliable, efficient affordable cars, Americans will again buy them as will the rest of the world and then Toyota will have a real fight on its hands. Americans will buy American cars if they represent a good value. Right now, Toyota is selling value.

Jame and Adoni

I could not agree more. Like they say bigger is only better if you know how to manage it.

I can only hope that Mercedes has come to grips with this as well and they want to return to the goal of selling high quality not high quantity.

WELL SAID! i feel that the last well made mercedes i got into that felt solid is my mums '98 SLK. if mercedes come back to their former glory (i sat in a new cls and it felt much better than attempts of late) then they can shake thi bad image and become a great manafacturer. at the end of the day being the biggest company does not mean a thing, look at some of the small companies, they have the best reputations going

Re: Daimler Chrysler Woes

Yes, it felt like DC was diluting their MB brand. Maybe severing Chrysler from Daimler and going back to being Daimler-Benz will bring back the glory days of MB. I think DC was pulled into "selling high quantity not high quality" with competition from the other manufacterers that they forgot their roots.

I read an article on the Internet yesterday. It will be interesting to see who the suitor for Chrysler will be. Several possible were named: Citroen, Hyundai, Renault, etc...

I just hope that when the "great divorce" takes place the G will not be impacted in a negative way.

GM makes the Hummer
Chrysler makes the Jeep
MB has the G made for them (and if I remember the Graz floor plan correctly, at a mostly Chrysler plant [some E production]???)

Then there's the very successful Sprinter which is made by MB, but sold by Chrysler ...

Should be interesting

RE: Daimler Chrysler Woes

I will keep in the back of my mind some smaller company that may want to diversify a bit more as being a viable candidate...like MAN Nutzfarhzeuge.

they make the cherokees etc in graz. the sprinter van is mercedes over here, i think mercedes didnt want to lose the quality appeal in usa by putting a van in the market. surely it wil make the g stronger if there is a split, its pre DC, and never really had any other input, its not like the ML sharing engines throught the range

I would love a Cummins, but I think that Mercedes / AMG already makes a better engine than the Hemi.

Better yes, but also a big part of the G55's 128,000 USD$ price tag. Mercedes plans to dump the G from it's line up soon, I would speculate that if Magna purchases Chrysler from Daimler, that they may also get the G with the deal; it would make sense as it's Magna's plant that manufacture it. Cheap Hemi power in a affordable G I would buy before mega buck AMG. Long live the G

I cannot see the G-Wagon in anyone else's hands mainly because of the military contracts. They have contracted the G-Wagon for the military for many years to come. They also have to supply parts at all of the dealerships until 2025 (I remember reading that somewhere).

If Magna buys Chrysler they will have to supply parts and honor all contracts anyhow. I suspect it would be the same for the G-Wagon if they purchased it from MB. Magna builds the G now and also supplies parts to almost all the other manufactures around the world, I'm sure they could handle G parts too. Besides they probably aready make most of the G's parts for MB. Check their web sites you will be surprised who they supply parts to.
