Re: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

Did it come with a complementary E320cdi or buy one G-Wagon, get another free?

Well compared to the UK that seems like a bargain. There is a 2006 G55K with 2500 miles on it for a mere £110,000 - thats a touch under $220,000 USD for a used G.

Yeah, I'd take one at that price - hell, you can't even get an absolute base model E-class for that price here in Australia.

Was it a unique color or interior? Any Euro options or something else unique?

Re: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

I understand what you are saying Maxwell! This is one I found for sale here in the Netherlands:

Mercedes-Benz G-CLASS G55 AMG

Year: 02-2005
KM: 33.740

Price: € 122.950 equals us$ 161K+ (I am not sure whether or not that includes the VAT/BTW/MwSt tax???)

So paying 'only' us$ 128.000 for a brand new G55 ... what's holding you guys up ?

RE: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

A secondhand RHD G55 AMG is priced at R2.3 million in South Africa. That translates to $324,000 USD!

I did not think that they still sold the G-Wagon in the UK. I think that I would be more afraid of the fuel prices. Then again, if you can afford £110,000 for the truck, who cares about what the fuel costs.

To be fair they don't really sell the G in the UK. Just LHD ones. The RHD G55K was done as a limited edition run of about 100 trucks or so and at a premium.

I think a LHD G55K in the UK would be about £15-20K cheaper.

But there is absolutely no way on earth you could get a G55K LHD or RHD for anywhere close to the £65K that a new G55K seems to cost you in the US.

2002 G55 (non Kompressors) with 10-20K miles are selling for around £40-50K. That's a $80-100K USD.

My 2000 G300 TD LHD in decent but not showroom condition and 100K miles on the clock cost about $40-45K USD.

So consider your selves lucky!

And don't forget we're paying close to $2 USD per litre of fuel!

Must be ex-Vat! Don't you have ridiculous tax on vehicles there? I know someone who had their dutch registered tax-free car stolen and the amount of paperwork that had to be filled out and provided to the manufacturer to proove that it wasn't sold and claimed stolen to avoid tax... before they would issue a replacement car.

Re: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

Though the prices listed are obscene, the 55 compressor can be had for the mid 90's and low mileage 05 in the mid 80's.

I think that the only obscene thing is MB dumping their prices in the US market to gain market share.

Everybody knows that pretax prices for MBs in the USA are cheaper than in Germany -and that does not include transport costs or the overheads of the US importer- which is where they are made.

To think that the European consumer is subsidizing the price of the American one?

Crazy, innit?

I wonder why that is? There must be some additional hidden costs built into the vehicles in Eu.

Go back and offer to sell them one at that price ... since other MB Dealers are selling the 'first off the boat', partially updated, MBUSA 2007 G55's for around $105k. You could make $23k!!!

I am guessing it was a typo, since their MSRP is $108K ... or the premium is for it being the first fully updated 2007 in the U.S.

MB car prices aren't the only place where Europe is higher. How about fuel prices or even the price of a cup of coffee - €2,-- !

I lived in London for 3 years, and found the only thing cheaper were aspirin and Hookers

(ok, just the aspirin )

Try London - £4 is not unusual.

Re: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

MB isn't engaged in "dumping". If they want to sell cars here - which they do - the cars have to be priced competively with other models. The blame is with the weakness of the dollar compared to the Euro or Pound.

... and even lower for higher mileage 2005 G55K's. This one just sold on eBay, after being run 3 times, for $70k:

and this one for $66k the week before:

Re: Laugh of the Year - G55 Price

The car was a half assed update according to my brother, old speedo, one aluminum pedal, had the headlights but no clock. They put chrome guards on everything and chromed the rims. I laughed because I'm almost 100% sure if I shopped across the country for a few weeks, I could find a dealer willing to sell me a fully loaded G55 for 105k out the door.
