Mass Air Sensor

I have been experiencing a weird lag while accelerating. When I reach 5000-6000 RPM, the engine would lag; as if someone disconnected the spark plug without it running rough.

Everything pointed to the MAF Sensor, When I looked up the parts, it costs over $400 to replace. I found several on eBay for around $150. Before paying a small fortune for another part, I wanted to try a test... I went to the store and purchased a $6 can of MAF Cleaner. It's more like super-quick-dry electrical contact cleaner.

The entire process took around 10 minutes. I removed the entire MAF "barrel" from the intake. I then removed the actual sensor from the "barrel" housing. I then used the MAF Cleaner and sprayed it down as best I could. Then I simply reassembled it.

After I was finished, I did a test run... It was only a few miles, but the engine was accelerating smoothly. I will be able to test it more tomorrow. So far so good!

Re: Mass Air Sensor

That may be an interesting find since it's the same part used on many of the more current engines, and also apparently one of the more frequent to fail parts. Did you get any check engine lights?

Re: Mass Air Sensor

I did not expect the part to be so expensive. Believe it or not, NAPA had the best price (besides eBay) for $175.

No, I did not get any "check engine" light. That would have made the hunt a little easier.

Re: Mass Air Sensor

In that case... I used CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner. Before you go to the store, double check the screws on the sensor itself. Mine required that secured torx, the tip that has the hole in the center of the tip. I did not worry about it because I already had a set. But if you have to buy it, it should cost less than $10 for the tools.

You can get generic Bosch for considerably less than MB; and it's the same part without the MB P/N. That NAPA price was excellent.

I asked my local mechanic before choosing to clean it. He commented that a lot of the time, if it's not that bad, it usually will not create a fault.

RE: Mass Air Sensor

I've driven the truck throughout the day. It seems to have fixed the problem. I have also noticed a subtile power increase when I am driving above 60mph on the highway. It seems to have a little more power in the higher RPMs.

I am curious if this is going to effect my fuel economy. I will not know for several weeks until I go through a few tanks of fuel.

Not bad for a $6.00 can of cleaner...

You don't have one in a 280GE.

Re: Mass Air Sensor

I was hoping the instructions for removing one in a G500 and a ML500 would be the same as they are both M113 motors.

I don't know about the air cleaner/engine cover removal being the same; but here's the procedure for the G.

Re: Mass Air Sensor

This stuff is great, bought it, took me about 10 minutes total to disassemble, clean the MAF and reinstall. No more CEL, car pulls much harder, my in city driving was averaging about 2mpg better than it has been the past few months.

Re: Mass Air Sensor

And I am willing to bet that you were not getting a computer fault either.

I am glad that it worked out for you. It was a lot cheaper than replacing the sensor...
