Re: 230G I just test drove... Impressions

I have been considering for almost a year Missys G , these are my two cents:
- To go for an engine swap, you are better off having Eurotruck find you a good truck in Europe, 280 or GD, rting a 25 year old, or waiting that one pops up in the US (I may sell my 280GE convertible this year and go for a 4 door, I think my truck when finished should sell a bit above 15K).
- You will never recover the investment of a swap, if done well the truck could be worth 20K but Missy reduced the price from 23k to now 16.5K
- Mike Serpes' impecable convertible with a 280 engine, 5 speed manual, extensive records and hard top sold for a little above 20K with 85k miles, after a year in the market
- Gs are difficult to sell, and a 230 with manual steering is worst
- Truck has wrong year in title and will require smog if not corrected in most States, the wrong year maybe an issue at the DMV if they check the plate
- The truck will be a good buy in the 10-12K range if you live at low altitude and have it as a toy for the weekend.
- Top speed "was" 71 miles/hour in a new one, I wonder what is the top speed of this old one? Hope not Unimog speed...
- I am in CA, so I have the added problem of not passing smog if I do not pay $3k at the lab

.....You will never recover the investment of a swap, if done well the truck could be worth 20K but Missy reduced the price from 23k to now 16.5K

Now you're getting some place.  If it takes a year to sell a truck, the price is outside the market value.  Pure and simple.  It's not at all hard to sell a G if you're asking a fair market price - witness Brian T's 617A converted SWB last month.  Just speaking of what I know of the market based on a lot of people asking me to look into these things, if the body is as perfect as it seems to be, this is probably a $9,000 truck to get it sold within 6 mo. in today's USA market.  If one had to turn it over in a month in an emergency, $7k would get it done.   A 16-20k asking price is just making it aparent that the seller is really not committed to selling it, or waiting for a sucker.  Unfortunately, what someone might have paid for something has absolutely nothing to do with what they might be able to sell it for.  And IMHO, "what it's worth" is only what you can sell it for in under a month on the "for sale" market.  All these are statements about the general market.  There are always exceptions where an individual is willing to pay outside market value for something for personal reasons, but if one is waiting to fid that one person, that's a choice made by the seller, not that "G's are hard to sell".

RE: 230G I just test drove... Impressions

Another thing to consider as far as the market value of a G is time of the year. I have been dealing with these trucks for a couple of years now, and watching them for longer than that, and it seems that the 460 market is completely dead between mid November and sometime in April. There are exceptions to this, but the seller has to be motivated to sell in order to move a G in the winter. Seems that once spring breaks, people who are new to G's get a lot more interested, which pushes the market up. One exception to this seems to be the Diesels, they are always higher, no matter what time of year, I guess it is all of the people wanting to run on bio and WVO.

Cheers,
Ben

RE: 230G I just test drove... Impressions

Heard from Roxanne on clubgwagen - her 300GD looks nice (below) Now if I could get to NS and import it...

Also, something to ponder:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/80-Mercedes-G-Wagen-Engine-3-0-L-Die...

Is this the right price? I guess shipping to Oregon would be a deal breaker.

As far as values go, I think you're right on - Ben. Seasonality would be a big factor.

I checked on NADA, KBB, Edmunds - no help there (Duh)

Re: 230G I just test drove... Impressions

I would not bother installing a NA 617 motor in a G. I have a SWB stock GD with that motor in it and it is underpowered for my short G. The LWB is even heavier (and more underpowered). The later versions (mid 80's) have 88 hp. This is not enough. Do you remember Wren hill Woody? It requires third gear and around 45mph up to the top in my truck. At your altitude there is more gasping for air. The problem is on the road up steep grades. Off road and in low range the machine works fine but there isn't power to spare. Only if that block was completely rebuilt to include the performance upgrades that Amzimmy did to his would it perform well. Those upgrades are larger pistons, upgrade cam and porting, exhaust header etc. Pistons range in price from around $160 to $350, rings@ around $100 and liners sleeves at around $40 times five so it is easy to get $1500 in just those parts. For me I already take care of three 617A vehicles and they fly up Wren hill. They can accelerate up it. The turbo motors develop around 123 hp and have higher torque. They are engineered to deal with higher temps and stress. Dave G seems to be pretty happy with his swap to that motor. A naturally aspirated D will make you crazy unless it is a carefully modified and tuned unit. A turbo is going in my truck in the future. There are a lot of these available here in Oregon. If you are wanting to go that route I can help you find one and I know of someone who can do the swap for a reasonable amout of money.

If you are looking for power I would suggest getting a 463 chassis. They have a more modern driveline that can withstand the V8 input. They are smooth and elegant. The later ones have all disk braking.

For what I do the 460 is perfect. It will be running on SVO soon as will all of our diesels. These are perfect motors to do this with. The SVO 300TD we run has no power penalty compared to the identical one running on diesel. The trick set-up for an oil burning G.

Re: 230G I just test drove... Impressions

Thanks again Dai!

So maybe adding an aftermarket turbo to a 300GD is a good option.

BTW Love the pics you posted in the Your G's Thread, nice looking Vineyard!

Yeah, I sold one of my VW Vanagons (with syncro) because I was tired of driving to Mt. Bachelor at 35mph. That rig had 92 HP in all wheel drive with a GVW of over 5K.

My Sprinter 3500 Camper fully loaded and towing will accelerate up hills, now that's a motor! I run B20 this time of year and I'll switch to B99 in the summer - it actually runs quieter but I haven't noticed a difference in mpg versus petro diesel.

Here's a thought: Win the lottery, call AMG and order a LWB G 463 with Sprinter motor and Unimog axles!

Chris,

no need to bother AMG with a Sprinter engine - the rest of the world gets the 463 with 320CDI (a tad stronger than the Sprinter 290CDI) straight from the dealer

Woody,

You might want to listen to Dutch and Mike concerning using a 230 to pull your boat. More power in 463s. Dutch and Mike gave excellent advice concerning power and pull.
