That seems to be a bit high, since I know of one that sold recently for $29,000 with 27,000 miles.

If I remember correctly, this vehicle was not imported by Europa, but rather by an individual in Colorado. Not sure about all the DOT work.

Oh to have such a ready and CHEAP supply of Gs available. I paid a lot more than that for my G300 with twice the mileage probably a lot rougher condition.... and I got it cheap! The only saving grace here is we have the TDs ands CDIs. It almost makes it worth importing G500s back to Europe!

Actually needs to bear some serious thought though as friend is considering a G55K....

The economy of the '85 300 GD I owned was great, but the trade off was that the engine was too small. Now diesel fuel is higher in price along with other fuels. We own a 2000 VW diesel bug and that is economical even with diesel fuel higher. 54 mpg highway is great. I don't drive it, but I do get to ride in it from time to time!

Does anyone know anything about this G, other than it may not have been a Europa import? Would anyone NOT buy this guy for any reason? I hate to say it, but I'm getting a little lustfull for more power

RE: 1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 for sale in Auto trader

I traded a few e-mails with the guy last year. As I understand it, this one doesn't have a DOT release. Now, I don't know for sure, but I suspect, that when he moved from Colorado to Illinois last year, he discovered that his new state wouldn't title it. I think the poor guy was caught unaware because he didn't know prior to his purchase what he was getting into. I think some states are more particular than others in this regard.

In fairness however, of the pre-import G500s I (casually) looked at, all of which were 1999 or 2000 models, none that I can recall had a proper DOT release, as my 280GE does. Not sure what was going on around that time frame. I talked to Rena Lee at DOT/NHTSA about it and she actually did a nice job of explaining it to me. But it got pretty murky and I don't remember the details now.

I got the impression it was a great G other than the DOT issue.

If it were a Europa Int'l G500, it would have a unique VIN (starting with WDBEG) and is 50 state legal; since Europa was classified as a small volume manufacturer on that model.

There's a 2000 G500 in SF bay area on craigslist.org as of yesterday, 79,000 miles, green, listed at $24k
