DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

This may interest a few you, mostly Maxwell Smart and your argument in the other thread about the "G's and the Environment" thread I believe. It is a long read if you look over all the pages and some of the results may surprise you and others I am sure will not. If you simply want to see the company that the G is in then just jump to page 21. ENJOY!

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

yeah, it's eye opening. hold on to your car longer. make it go farther.

The report is done by a marketing firm that I think is directly funded by the American auto industry and Exxon.

I read somewhere (tried googling it again but couldn't) that they inflated the prius cost by including all hybrid research in it's cost while deflating the H3 cost by not including the cost of research done on the chevy chassis and it's production line that the H3 is based on. But there too, can't find my sources.

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

I could not help but stare at the estimated life miles of vehicles. I don't understand why there would be a difference between the LX470 and a Landcruiser. They are different badged vehicles; but everything else is the same. Looks like my LR Disco II has a way to go before being replaced by a Range Rover (Series) III. The Range Rover was only 3000 miles better than the Disco.

I'm glad I got rid of my Mitsubishi Montero (Pajero) a few years back. I am trying to figure out why a G would cost more per mile than an H1. Other than that, it looks like the G goes a long ways too.

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

So how many H1's has anybody ever seen with 379k miles on the clock??? Don't think I've ever seen one over 200k, much less 300k. The Prius, Honda Insight, Accord Hybrid and the Civic Hybrid all top out at just over 100k according to these guys, which is ridiculous. Granted, all need new batteries about that time, but this is typically about $1-3k as I understand it. Somewhat like replacing a blown transmission in any other car.

I do not subscribe to the current global warming line of thought of Al Gore et. al. and have seen little hard evidence that backs their claims, but I must say, this particular study does appear to be a bit skewed.

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

And this is absolutely a knee slapper, they list the Jeep Wrangler as the least expensive vehicle to operate in the elsuv category. There must be some diesel hybrid squirrel cage powered Wrangler that I don't know about. The last Wrangler I had, with the inline 6 cylinder, sucked gas like it was going out of style (about 13mpg combined, if I was nice to it) and had poor reliability.

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

That's because this report was commissioned by good ol' Detroit iron...not to say all of their findings are wrong, just that American cars and especially American SUV's got particuarly favorable gerrymandering. As a note, my parents had '96 Chevy Tahoe, we put 100k miles on it, sold it in January of '00, 2 months and 2k miles later the owner lost the tranny and a bunch of other stuff. Funny thing is, before we sold the car, we spent a few hundred bucks on a FUL inspection by the dealer. They certified it and everything. 200k miles my ass...

I would like someone, if possible, to verify a cost of replacement of a battery for a hybrid because from what I can recall a few years back the cost was almost the value of the car itself when new and the entire cost of the car was subsidized by the auto manufacturers at that time. If this is true, then why would anyone replace the battery and just move into another new car?

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

For 2005-2006
Hybrid-Related Component Coverage: Prius' hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty. Refer to applicable Owner's Warranty Information booklet for details.

For 2007 Toyota ups the ante and goes 10 years 150k miles.

The price for a battery pack is $3800 plus install.
Toyota claims they will recycle the battery pack core.

Re: DUST TO DUST ENERGY AUTOMOBILE REPORT

Just read that report. Where in the world did they get those mileage figures ?? They don't make any sense at all, except for the sprinter van!
