If you want to try it Redline mades several different ATFs: 'Synthetic ATF' (Dextron ll, Mercon, and Mercedes approved fluid), 'High-Temp ATF' (Dextron lll or Mercon recommended for optimal operation at 70 degrees F higher temperature) and three others. 'D4-ATF', 'Racing ATF' and 'C+ATF'. I think the Synthetic ATF, the first one listed would be a good choice. It is a commitment because the system uses a lot of fluid. It is supposed to handle high temps better than standard ATF and improve cold weather shifting. It is also supposed to have a much lower evaporation loss at temperature compared to petroleum based ATF. I run a little of it in our automatics. I have not done a complete change out but I have the oil to do this on the next one. It has been difficult to get that specific oil in this area for some reason but I finally got some. I think anything that can reduce wear, handle heat better and add to the lifespan of an automatic is worth the extra money. I am interested in wear protection most of all and the other oils made by Redline that I use deliver that. I suspect that the ATF will do the same.

Where would I find an official listing of Mercedes approved lubricants and other fluids with regards to my 96 G 320?

hi dai,i have looked at D4 ATF which says synthetic,is that the oil you menioned for the autobox on my 280 gel?

the owners manual says "ATF DEXRON II"

My diff oils were changed in 2002 at 61,864 miles= 5 years ago and covered 20,768 miles since.(is that ok??)

automatic gearbox oil was changed at the same time and also changed again in 2004 6000 later. but i have noticed no mention was made about the autobox-filter being changed so i guess the atf has covered about 14000 miles.


anyway,i have a good friend of mine coming over on saturday morning to change all the oils i will post pics of the work in progress hopefully and show the colour of the oils

Huss, I would use "Synthetic ATF" instead of "D4-ATF" for an automatic transmission. Either that or the "Hi Temp" if your machine is towing heavy loads in hot conditions.

Redline D4-ATF is designed for manual transmissions calling for Dextron ll ATF. It is engineered to provide the right 'hook-up' for syncros without wearing them. I have used this oil in manual boxes for at least 13 years in MB manual boxes. Excellent for that application.

The odd thing with my supplier is that when I tried to get the "Synthetic ATF" to use in autoboxes they kept getting in the D4-ATF. It took a bit of patience but now I can get both types of oil. Try to go to the Redline website and read the detail that describes the different oils. They have subtile differences for very specific applications. With Redline oil is not oil, they target the gear oils to a very narrow set of requirement that can be confusing to people new to their product lines. See if you can get a product number and refer that to your supplier.

ok,i have been intouch with the european distributor in the uk and the guy was a great help! apparantly a us sales rep was here last week and was promoting various redline products.well anyway the uk rep (lee)advised i use MTL rather than MT90 because it was the direct replacement for the oe oil advised in the handbook.he said the MT90 was a "heavier oil" not needed in the T/C.

next topic was the "synthetic ATF" is the direct replacement as dutch and dai mentioned.

now this was the interesting part,lee says yes the 75w90 diff oil is fine but when i asked him about cutting out diff whine he said go for the " HEAVYSHOCK PROOF GEAR OIL". lee said it makes the diff gears feel and perform like new due to the characteristics of the oil.i read the info on this and it sounds good and not much dearer in comparison to the normal 75w90 gear oil.

intersing to hear your comments before i order......

MT90 is what is recommended for the TC by the Redline top inhouse technical dog, Dave Granville. I think I'd take his word over a sales rep or stockist any day of the week. That sales rep must be thinking of the ML, which uses a much lighter weight in the TC. After all, the MB recommended fluid for the G's TC is 85W-90.

On the diffs, Dave very specifically recommended against the Shockproof oils. He gave me a reason that had to do with the additives; and I don't remember what that reason was. That being said, I do know that Hipine uses it successfully in his 280/300G; and is quite happy with its performance for him.

However, follow your own bliss on these.

MT 90 is a GL 4 oil That is a multigrade 75-90. The spec sheet 235.1 oil is a GL 4 oil 80W. (For the VG-80 in a 460)

MTL is a GL 4 formula that covers 70W80. MTL is a little lighter but will work. I like the range of MT 90 better and I suspect it will protect slightly better in the heat. Both will work and will be much better than straight petroleum 80WT. I spoke to an engineer at Redline about it too and the recommendation was for MT-90

Consider trying 75-140 Redline before going to the Super Shockproof. Super Shockproof is Super Thick! I tried it and went back to 75-90 in an ultra heavily loaded limited slip Dana rear diff. I would go for a less severe choice and see if your whine issue is helped before firing the last option. Or, try MGC (Multi-Gear Concentrate) by BG products Inc. Excellent product. Diff whine is likely caused by the mesh of the teeth being slightly off or wear. Consider having a specialist check it. Mine do not whine at all.

I think Dave uses Super Shockproof Ultralightweight in is T-Case, not the Diffs. He is in Cold Country and wants the flow to the gearboxes inner reaches.

dutch,thanks for your reply.my owners manual states the use of sae 80 oil for the t/c and not 85 or 90.when i gave these figures to lee he assumed that like for like mtl 80 is the direct replacement and that the 90 grade was too heavy against the 80 unless you are in constant GA across the desert.

it would interesting to get feedback from hipine about the diff oil. i hope he reads this thread or maybe i will pm him.

Careful with the words.  Red line doesn't sell anything called "Super Shockproof" oil.  They have a line called "Shockproof" gear oil and in that line there are 3 different types.  "Superlight Shockproof" pours out of the bottle like ATF, "Lightweight Shockproof" pours about like 30-weight motor oil, and "Heavy Shockproof" pours like a 90 weight gear oil.  They all get their anti-wear characteristics from "...a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent..." (can you say sulphur?).

I put Superlight Shockproof in my transfer case after seeing the tiny passages in there that need to transport the oil, and knowing the very cold temperatures I see quite often.  If it weren't for the cold, I'd use the Lightweight Shockproof in the transfer case (I put Lightweight Shockproof in the diffs as there are no such tricky oil passages there).  I personally feel like the heavy shockproof would be overkill for any normal G application, but if you're trying to get a worn out diff to hold together a while longer, or want to do endurance desert racing...yeah, maybe Heavy Shockproof is your player.  There's no free lunch with viscosity.  Normally higher viscosity is associated with better lubrication in gear oils, but that goes out the window when you allow high pressure additives that the GL spcs don't.  If the additives are giving you the lubricity, then the higher viscosity is only adding drag and heat to the system.

All that said, I think the MT90 and MTL would both be just fine in the transfer case.  In my opinion, it's splitting hairs to choose between them, and either is so far superior to the dino juice that the box was designed for, you'd be fine with any of the above and never notice the difference.

Dutch, my memory isn't what it should be, but I think some of the reason for them steering you away from the Shockproof line is that it doesn't meet GL specifications for some things like corrosion inhibition.  I could be misremembering though.

Sorry, my mistake. Superlight Shockproof stuck in my head as the name of that line of products. The Shockproof heavy weight is the one I tried out and it is much heavier than 90wt. It pours like honey and is a pain to draw out of the container and get into the diff. My understanding about the Shockproof group is that they are designed for racing applications to protect gears and parts from impact shockloading.

had the diff oils changed yesterday,but i have not had time to drive it on the highway.it does seem seem to give me the feeling of smoother ride.maybe its me

but the oils that came out of the diffs were a dark graphite colour and they seemed thick and unhealthy!

tc and auto are next on the agenda.
