Indiana Drew the speed is longer, so you have to have a shorter transmisson shaft. In addition you will need a 5 speed shifter unit, because its differnt to the 4 speed one.

The center driveshafts are different lengths and as mentioned the shifters are different. All in all, it is a pretty big project. The issue I have is that at high altitude fifth gear is worthless anyway. The four speeds have a lower first, which is better off-road. I think I would personally have preferred the four speed in my truck.

The 5 sp getrag in 5ft is 1 to 0.7 as opposed to 1 to 1 in the 4 sp. on the road it will decrease RPM about 400 at 65MPH and will get much better gas mileage. For my money, if you can find one with all the extra parts Buy it!! W

If the engine is not strong enough - you won't be able to use it. Also, when you have larger tires (they work as a gear reduction - like a 5th gear) an additional 5th might become totally useless. But lets not get into gears and numbers again.

In my case I can run fourth at light throttle but fifth at the same speed requires full throttle. Economy in a 280GE is a joke anyway, 3 ton truck, antiquated CIS fuel injection and a bricklike shape pretty much render economy a useless debate for me.

Indiana Drew Be careful. A lot of what's being said here (about ease of swapping 4 speed for 5 speed) applies to only the 4 spd vs the Getrag 5 speed. Per Harald's link, there are iron box 5 speeds with separate bell housings for the G. These transmissions can be bolted to the bell housing you currently have on your M110, and used with the same shifter, linkage, clutch slave, etc that's in the truck now. The numbers on the shift knob won't be in the right place, but other than that, and the center drive shaft length, the G-specific iron box 5 speeds are a bolt-up from the four speed arangement. A swap that I've done in a weekend using non-g verstions of the trans tha trequired more mods than would have been necessary if I had the g version of the box. Whether or not the transmission might be enjoyable to drive, or accomplish some other goal you might have for the project, I won't go into since you didn't ask about or elaborate on those subjects. -Dave G.

Peak torque isn't much higher than that either. The old gas engines had these points up much higher. Dropping revs by 5% (through tires) raised my mpg by about 8%, simply by bringing the freeway revs closer to the ideal. You have to match the engine, transmission, final drive and tires all at once. Lower revs are not not always the answer.

Thanks for all the thoughtful information, I really didn't have any particular expectation for the level of detail that might be offered here. It sounds as though the 4 to 5 or 5 to 4 can be done. It does though seem that the utility of one over the other is quite subjective. In short it sounds like it is harder than changing socks, but easier than knitting them ... Indiana Drew
