RE: Brake squeal

A couple of questions: how many miles on those rotors? Do you off-road a great deal in deep water and/or mud?

RE: Brake squeal

50,000 miles. Never been off road or in deep water. But, I do driver the G all winter long. Why?

Re: Brake squeal

There is a a product called 'disk brake quiet' made by CRC that glues the pad to the caliper piston end. You might give it a shot. It is an orange goo that can be applied to the pad when it is installed. The stuff has worked for me. There used to be thin shims that were installed between the pad and piston but they are no longer available. I try to change pads at 50% wear to avoid letting the piston push out any farther than that. I have found that if the pads are worn to the sensors the probablility of getting the pistons to push back in to allow space for the new full thickness pads is low. This is with other Mercedes disk brakes not the G but I'm not going to push it with the G pads. The calipers are $800 to a grand for the pair in the US. Yikes! Pads are low cost.

sensors

I thought there were sensors on the rear brakes.

There are none --- At least on driver rear. Is that correct?

On my 2000 G500, there was one rear sensor on the passenger side. None on the driver's side.

Braker Rotor Removal

There is so much rust I can't get the rotor off the parking brake pads.

I released the parking brake adjustment and the rotor comes off about 1/2 inch.

There is too much tension against the inner rotor and pads probably caused by rust and dirt build up.

Any ideas how to get it off?

RE: Braker Rotor Removal

Done.

Tough job. The rust build up in the inner rotor (see pic below) would not allow the parking brake pads to clear. It took alot of prying and pounding. I was able to use a chisel through one of the lug holes. I was able to tap the shoe and pry at the same time.

The pass rear was a breeze. None of the rust build up seen on the driver side.

Bought all the parts from Caliber Motors(Anaheim Mercedes) - John Lyons - (800) 252-6877
discounted genuine parts w/warranty, knowledgeable, patient - had the parts the next business day -(800) 252-6877

brake disks $55.76
brake pads $60.68
sensor $5.00

No brake squeal. So hopefully ---- fixed!

RE: Brake squeal

I've been driving my 1986 300GD under water alot ( some of it salt water) and my brakes don't look anything like that. On the other hand the rotors on my 2006 VW Beetle seem to turn totally brown with rust overnight. What's up with these modern steel alloys?
