A210 540 00 74 Relay Unit

I recently replaced this on my G.
Does anyone know what this does??
Number 5 on the picture.

Long story short,,,,,
Engine starter sometime did not turn on my G.
So, I took my G to dealer and they replaced starter and relay.
Starter still failed when hot.
Even worse, engine stopped when idling.
So, I took it to dealer again and they finally identified the issue and replaced this relay unit.
They told me that this is controlling starter.

On this relay unit, there are 5 or 6 15A fuses and one big 40A fuse. So, it's obviously controling some kind of electric power.
I'm wondering if this really fixed all the issues.

All of the issue was not identifiable by MB computer diagnose.

Thanks.
Yasu

That's the K40 Relay Module which Braingears just replaced on his W463. Take a look at the attached PDF. As you can see, it controls a lot of stuff; and the failure is fairly common.

DUTCH,
Thanks for the info as always.
I need to print this out to understand clearly but it does lots of jobs for sure...
This should have been easy fix if identfied easily

Hope other members here will not experience the same as I did...

Dutch,

is that a part people should carry when far away from dealers for a while?

I don't; but it might be when you start to get some age/miles on the truck. It's a bit expensive to be carrying around, if you don't need it.

Of all the 463's on this forum, I can only think of 4-5 instances where it had to be replaced; and two of them are in the last couple of days. Maybe the parts suppliers on the Forum can share some thoughts.

As per Dutch's pdf you can easily troubleshoot some of the K40 action.

Fuses K40f1(15A), f5(15A), f6(15A) and f4(40A) should be always hot / +12Volt

Turning on Ignition (S2/1) it should activate K40k5 (diff lock relay) check for +12V on Connector C/Pin 4&5

Turning on Ignition (S2/1) it should activate K40k9 (engine 87 M1/M2 relay) check for +12V on Connector E/5&6, A/1&3 and/or at fuse K40f2 & f3

to test the Fuel pump relay and others you might have to remove K40 and set-up a little test harness, as I do not know if you can remove the individual K40 connectors separately and get to the pins as needed.

If you want me to, I can write up a short test sequence for the K40 relay - using just some single wires with connectors, a 12V battery and a test lamp

We sell "old style" 210 540 00 72 (up to end of 1996) for $89.00 and
"new style" 210 540 00 72 (from model year 1997) for $102.00
I don't think is tooo expensive to keep it as a spare and fell yourself comfortable away from your friendly Mercedes service.

I would need an applicable VIN to see if I can find it.
