Vehicle(s): '84 280GE -> 300GD turbo, '84 300SD veg, 06 Navion Posts: 570 | Putting the G in Oregon I returned back home last night. Had a great trip back. I drove 1,470 miles over five days going from Albuquerque through Santa Fe, Pagosa Springs, CO, Mesa Verde NP, Moab (naturally) and Boise, ID. Smoothe sailing the whole way with only one mishap - a shifting linkage bushing - easy roadside fix, and James had thoughtfully provided a box with spare parts. Here's a few of the trip highlights: (James and Woody.jpg) (St Francis Cathedral.jpg) (Far View Mesa Verde.jpg) (Knife Edge Mesa Verde.jpg) (Kane Springs Moab.jpg) (Hurrah Pass road Moab.jpg) (Sunset over Slickrock.jpg) (Malheur Valley Oregon.jpg) Attachments ---------------- James and Woody.jpg (319KB - 2 downloads) St Francis Cathedral.jpg (231KB - 0 downloads) Far View Mesa Verde.jpg (195KB - 0 downloads) Knife Edge Mesa Verde.jpg (219KB - 0 downloads) Kane Springs Moab.jpg (404KB - 0 downloads) Hurrah Pass road Moab.jpg (249KB - 1 downloads) Sunset over Slickrock.jpg (170KB - 0 downloads) Malheur Valley Oregon.jpg (362KB - 0 downloads)

They fail regularly; but it's an easy fix.

The condition is just one of the aspects of this G that sold me - the other was the pedigree! I will garage it, but I will also use it for daily driving sometimes and for the occasional jaunt into the woods around Bend. The baby belongs to James, mine are grown (13, 11 and 8) by the way they all approve!

Woody, I'm glad to hear you made it home in one peice. Sounds like you had a great time. It was great to meet you and it makes me happy to know the G is going to such a good home w/ you and your family. Plus it will give me one more reason to visit my old home of Bend, Or. some day hopefully soon. If you need any further road-side coaching, feel free to call me any time!! -James

Vehicle(s): '84 280GE -> 300GD turbo, '84 300SD veg, 06 Navion Posts: 570 | Re: Putting the G in Oregon Thanks Fjærhaug, I intend to keep it stock, with however a couple minor changes such as a USA standard receiver-style hitch, maybe updated fog lights and it does need a subwoofer. I love the color and the interior set up. A question though - are there narrow fender flares I can install along with "slightly" wider wheels (not necessarily alloys) to give it a moderately more aggressive look? What about the taller springs for a little better off road clearance? I'm not even sure these changes will be necessary, just exploring the options for now. One other thing I'm considering is an engine swap to the 617a to run biodiesel. I would at the same time update the whole fuel delivery system and add one of the "GreenBenz" heated filter set ups. This is in the long term, however.

It seems the ORC springs are the way to go, glad to have confirmation from you! I'm still not sure about changing things because the stock set up seems so correct. Hey Scott, nice looking G500, White is very cool! I think I've seen it around town...

hipine Date registered: Jul 2006 Location: US, CO, Bailey Vehicle(s): 460 1980 280GE w. 617A | Re: Putting the G in Oregon Not sure what "look" you're going for, but mine has 2-stripe white MB springs, 461-style flares, and 6" wide steel wheels with 235/85-16 tires. This is the only "intermediate" step with factory parts between where you are and the alloys with 2" wide flares. With the 6" steel wheels you can also fit 255/85 tires for a look like I have in the bottom picture, though that one shows the wider flares, I did have the white springs on there too. -Dave G. PS - while I ran the 255/85s I felt they over-taxed the motor, and your 5th gear would be utterly useless. I ran one set (20k miles). Some kind of Cooper Discoverer ST or something. Went back to 7.50-16 after that, and on to 235/85 when 7.50s became hard to get. I always wanted to try 8.25-16, but the only tire I know of in that size is the Michelin XCL, or was it XZL? My old pal John Lee at expeditionexchange.com has a set on his (formerly my) D90 and they look great. I thnk they need a 7" rim to work right though...and probably a V8 to turn them...anyhoo.... You may see it around with a very good looking blond (my wife) and two little kids (3 YO twins) in the back. My wife and the kids like the G500 better than the Audi A8. So...I have the unfortunate task of driving a nice Audi most of the time! I really do prefer the G!!!

The truck currently has BFG AT/KO 265/75 16's and they are just a little bit wider than the fender. They'll fling mud, but not too bad. The experience I had in Moab (driving out Hurrah Pass road) taught me something - airing down to 20 psi made a big difference in traction but the tires looked as though there was LOTS more room for lower air pressure. I didn't go lower because I had some pavement to run before any chance of re-inflating. I don't have any immediate plans to change anything, but really I want to see what options are out there. Maybe the 461 fender flares would be correct.
