What's this noise on my 03 G500

See if I can describe this noise in a way that makes sense. I believe it’s in the front left suspension area, but I could be wrong. When I go over a sharp bump, or travel on rough, uneven pavement I get a noise that sounds like if you were to take a metal rod and smack it back and fourth inside an oversized link of chain. I’ve climbed under the truck and haven’t noticed anything loose, but I’m not an expert by any means. I had it at the dealer for the same nose and they said “it’s the heat shield, so we tightened it”, although I doubted it cause it did sound like heat shield rattle (familiar with that noise from my old Land Rover), and it did it about three miles away from dealer as soon as I left. Thanks for the help.

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

I very much doubt it has anything to do with the heat shields. There's a bunch of those, and they can indeed ratttle, but they rattle at the speed of the engine. They are way too small and light to resonate at the low frequency excitation of going over a bump. I found most of my heatshields had been over-tightened at the factory, and the fender washers had sliced clean through the shield in about half of them. Some of them were basically just hanging there by a sliver. They made a good rattling sound like a pebble in a tin can, doesn't sound at all like the noise you are describing.

Does the rattle go away when you have driven for a while? I get a pretty loud clunk going over bumps, louder on dips, sounds a bit like what you are describing. Sounds like a big iron bar clanking into another one, coming from the left front suspension. Goes away after five miles, so I'm guessing it has to be the shocks taking time to warm up and get moving. I'm on my third set of shocks, maybe I'm ready for the fourth. You might be ready for a new set too, by the sound of it.

Ben,

if your truck has a lot of miles (50k +) it could be a shock going bad - they display those metal noises sometimes when they fail.

I had a strange metal to metal noise in Costa Rica with a brand new 270CDI loaner. I crawled under it and I found that the rubber cushion on the anti sway bar brace had moved out.

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

The noise seems like it's pretty consistent, more noticeable on some surfaces more than others, but always there. I haven't had the shocks replaced, but I'll tell them to take note of issues others have had with the same noise. I had an issue a while back were I thought it was the shocks, and their response was “well, the shocks not leaking”, so they didn’t want to pull it off to look.

I think my dealer is kind of lazy when it comes to dealing with my truck, and often times aren’t to open to suggestion about what it may be. I found it a little strange when the manager says "I just read the manual on this truck for the first time, and it does some crazy stuff". So that's kind of why I'm trying to pin down the noise, so I can say "I believe it's this or that" so please pay attention.

Thanks Richard

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

Hi Harald,

It's actually right at 29,850, so under 50. It has in the past, and has started doing it again recently, where it also feels like when going over large bumps, or turning over dips that something in the shock, or steering is rubbing. I say steering just cause you can really feel it when it happens resonate through the steering wheel. I doubt they are related, but sounds like it's all shock related. Or at least I think it's shock related?

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

This is very likely a loose suspension part. Any of the rubber isolated parts are good candidates. The example that Harald gave is an easy one to see. More difficult to see would be a split in the rubber isolation of the lower front shock mount. Try laying under the truck while someone rocks the truck side to side as violently as possible.

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

Harald,

Thanks for that photo. I went to take a look at mine, and bingo! Same thing. You can see where it was just starting to touch the metal. I guess a cold shock absorber would allow it to touch, and a warmed up shock absorber wouldn't. It's fixed now, and it's completely silent.

What would we do without this forum?

I had the exact same experience as Harald and W5YK at Pismo dunes. Really easy to fix, once I found it. I'd start there.

Hey Harald-

Who loaned you a new 270 in Costa Rica? Gotta find those type of friends myself... hahaha

Cool picture. Limón?

Alfonso,

it was close to the Arenal volcano. And yes, it is vital in life to make good friends.
First couple of days I had a (forgot already what engine it had - 400 or 55) convertible. Drew lots of attention.

Ha! I bet it did draw attention... I bet those guys are still talking about it. That image is so honest.

Of course, some of them would probably never change their Chevy 350-retrofitted Land Cruisers, because they're such diehards as well.

Long live friends and adventure stories !

RE: What's this noise on my 03 G500

Thanks for all the help guys. Crawled under it again yesterday and didn't notice anything out of place, so it's going into the shop. I'll bring a list of points that you all brought up of places and points they should check (we'll see if they listen). thanks again, and I'll post the findings.

Marco,

What was the problem with the tie-rod? Bushings? Is there any way to diagnose that without taking it to bits?
