I just shook hand on a deal for an '80 280GE - seller is doing some work on it so it is mechanically tip top. Body looks pretty good (for a 27 yr old truck) but ... someone back in the "Old Country" painted did an interesting paint job on what I gather was originally a red truck. I can live with it as is, but it is a bit odd being part yellow and part blue. I have thought about painting over the blue with black and naming her Bumble G. If that doesn't work out ans I decide to get it repainted, is there any good reason to go back to the original color?

Red is a pretty popular color for the G. And any restoration back to the original would be prefered. There are numerous posts on this site with statements from G owners who prefer keeping their Gs, especially 460s, in stock. I get sick of seeing these yellow Gs. Black and yellow? Don't school buses have the same colors? So you would be called "Shortbus?" I actually like the blue. Personally, blue was one of my other options if red was not available. Then, I lucked out and found a red one. And a bunch of other people were trying to climb over each other for the red G. See where I am going with this?

Never thought about the "School Bus" factor ... Though I do have a friend who describes herself as "driving the short bus to world domination ..." As far as restoration, I don't know how far I'll go to getting it back to "pristine" I guess I'll have to spend some time with it and see. I am not sure there is anyone with G Class body work experience around here.

Spots350sl, That would be the one (comming from the seller) . I'm going to run the old girl through the shop and do a front axle service (wheel bearings, king pin bearings, seals, and C/V boots) and replace the transfer case mounts for Drew before he takes delivery. It should make him a good truck, as I have been daily driving it for a year now and she hasn't given me any trouble. As you can see from Ben's post, yes ... I suppose if in its current paint scheme it won the coveted Perth Amboy to Misanthrope Cup arguments could be made to preserve it as is. Having no knowledge of such accolades thus the question ...

KERR Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Paint Colors (Not A Poll ...) depends on what you going to do with it, I think the Yellow is ok, but it need to be all yellow. Look at the D-90 in yellow. ever one love them, and that discovery XD in yellow was cool too. If its going to see a lot of trail used paint it silver or white, they don't show scratches as bad. On the other hand black with lots of scratches is cool too On the other hand you could make the line from blue to yellow wavy and paint all the blue a mud brown color and it would look like you had been swimming all the time! Are you keeping your current G? If you decide to sale some parts hit me up on the bumper and winch..

I had considered having it done in the same silver as my 500, but thought 2 in that color might be decadent! I could just tell people my G shrunk in the laundry - never put one in the dryer ... All yellow was my first thought after Bumble G (yellow and black). Although, as was pointed out, the "short bus" look may not be cool. Though as my Texas friend says "Driving the short bus to world domination" may not be a bad sub title I plan on keeping the 500 - I just had the Hutchenson Rim Locks mounted with Wrangler Mt/Rs ...

Wife has a blue black swb and I have a metallic blk lwb. Many people where I live think I have one G but get confused with the extra door situation. My gas station attendant always asks if this is a new feature that you can shorten the G. I think he was serious for the first year until he asked me if I had 2 of these vehicles. I fessed up. Same color might actually be more inconspicuous than you think.

Out here any G is a novelty and as far as I know, a SWB is non existent. Whatever color I paint it, I still don't know about what to do with the diamond plate. I suppose if it is solid underneath, the pop rivet holes could be patched or spot welded to fill. If not, I guess silver might go well with diamond plate. Bring at best a Rally Poser, I have no idea if the plate is on there to make the hood and fenders stepable or if it is just an aesthetic choice. I assume the plate on the vertical suffices is a stylistic choice ... I also may be looking to swap the 15" wheels and included tires for some 16's ... And the rims are neither yellow nor blue ...

I would relocate the selenoid box for the winch under the hood. Provides better air flow for the engine and protects the selenoids more (they tend to corrode in that forward position).

Its not that the combo is so objectionable, its that the transition between colors was freehanded ... Any thoughts on the diamond plate? I will look at doing the solenoid relocation, but assume that requires extending some of the wiring ...

I think the color makes it all that much cooler, but i think it would only work on a SWB with all those toys (hence why my 500 will remain silver). -M

Heck of deal on them but shipping was crazy high when i got a quote.. then agin everthing into and out of bristol is high... guy no one likes us lol... Shipping on 5 boxes to Evansville, IN 5 day Fedex Grounp was $160.00. The tire place here gave me a song and dance about how they balanced poorly. I have not run much over 75 MPH but they are not too much worse then the stock wheels and the Michelins. Slight vibration at some speeds which is more of a steering damper issue then the heavier wheel/tire combo. I already am questioning the width of tire I chose, but they will be fine - they are paid for!!!
