Shipping cost from Hamburg to Calgary, Canada?

This is my first post on a topic so please be patient with me(a newbie) if it has been covered before.

I’ve been contacting this MB used car dealership over in Hamburg for a G that I like. A pre-92 463. From their initial reply by email they seem to agree on exporting the truck to Canada. Therefore, I replied requesting for more detailed pictures and the shipping cost. It looks like they did their homework as all the pictures are looking good. I think I’m happy with what I’ve seen. They quote me that the shipping cost will be around $2,500 euro. Do you think the cost of shipping is right from their quote?

I’m not in a hurry. I want to know what are the steps and documents that I should obtain beforehand from the dealership.

Could anyone help me to translate the specifications from German to English? I’ll email them to you.

Thanks,

Am

I wish I can see it myself but I can’t afford the time.

Those online translators are not really good.

RE: Shipping cost from Hamburg to Calgary, Canada?

€2500 sounds about right for the shipping.

But I agree that purchasing a vehicle from photos is very risky.

And would it necessarily be street-legal in Canada?  Re: emissions, safety etc.

RE: Shipping cost from Hamburg to Calgary, Canada?

I paid around 1300.00 DM (870.00USD) back in 1999 for each G I sent from Bremen to Port Elizabeth, NY
Shipping from Hamburg to NY cost around 1000.00 Euro (1300.00USD)
Shipping from NY to Europe (Germany, Finland) $850.00 , did it many times.

I have been considering Twodogs swb "OIL" which was ebay last week and look at Havas to ship from SouthHampton, UK to Tacoma, Washington and their quote was 914 BP not including insurance. The Fellow did not mention how much more to ship to Vancouver but it could not be that much more so I waited for further response as I would also like to avoid US customs in my case.

Which Canadian port were you going to ship to? Ocean freight is cheaper to Halifax but you have to ship from Halifax to Calgary which can be expensive especially by truck.

Re: Shipping cost from Hamburg to Calgary, Canada?

Chris,
I have shipped both routes. One, a 1984 280GE to Vancouver from South Hampton, UK via Halifax (rail freight from Halifax to Vancouver) and the other a 1987 230GE from Bremerhaven, Roll-on/Roll-off to Port Tacoma. The R/R to Tacoma was considerably less expensive at that time (circa 2003). You don't have to deal with US Customs if you have it sent to a bonded warehouse in Tacoma. I then had it brought by a bonded car carrier company across the US/Canada border to Vancouver. The car carrier I used would regularly take loads of Canadian vehicles south to Seattle and come back empty most times. I was charged quite lightly. A document for proof of export must be given to the US cutoms at the Canadian border when the vehicle leaves the USA, a very simple procedure.
I had Kuehne & Nagel International Ltd. of Vancouver arrange the shipping details to Tacoma and process the Canada Customs paperwork.

Chris,

I’m unsure about which port the truck going to land if it is coming from Europe. I will try to gather more information and let you know.

Re: Shipping cost from Hamburg to Calgary, Canada?

I only can suggest - don't do any money transfers forehand without seeing your car. There's lot of different kind of frauds. When i searched a G for myself (about 4 months) via internet from germany - there were about 4 or 5 different "firms" who tried to convince me that the car, im interested of and about what i had just asked some questions - is already in port and waiting for the shipping - just pay the money... Okay - i agree - buiyng without seeing is reasonable only when the firm is well known or then directly from MB representative in Germany.

Tarmo

I am with you. Ask some body on the board in or near Hamburg to have a look at it, if you ant going to see it first hand, it might be the biggest mistake you have ever made. Junk or not ever getting the G it at all.

Maybe your father then just will search a nice ride to a 4x4cal with good expedition of course - i'm pretty sure he knows better sources for a good G than someone in Canada
