how much air is ok in fuel system?

I have a few air bubbles in the clear fuel prefilter. I have heard that some is inevitable, but I am also thinking that this is not normal. can one prime this out of an open injector with the hand primer?? it is running a little rough at start but otherswise smooth as buttah.
thanks!

Macjack I have the same bubbles, which concern me, but the engine runs pretty smooth. Wonder what the others will say...

Re: how much air is ok in fuel system?

That air in the prefilter is normal. The way the short hose goes down into the lift pump from that 90 degree plastic filter makes it hard to get the air out of there. The design of the fuel filter and fuel return from the injectors sends air in the system back to the tank. Pretty clever design.

If there is air in the system that requires bleeding you will know it. It won't run! I loosen the banjo fitting on top of the fuel filter housing (17mm hex) and pump until I get bubble free fuel. Changing the filter it helps to fill it to the top with your favorite fuel or LubroMoly Diesel Fuel Purge before installing it. If it installed dry there is a slug of air that will get shoved into places that will take a long time to get rid of. You can't force air through the injector lines with the primer pump.

These motors stumble and run a bit rough when cold. When they warm up they are smoooth. On bioD or SVO they are super smooth.

thankis, Dai. Looks like I'll let it be as it does run pretty well.

Re: how much air is ok in fuel system?

Dai, what are you running in your GD to use SVO??

how is the plantdrive setup on the TD doing?

i'm keep having some issues with mine that I'm trying to get sorted if i ever get the time! I can run fine on "return to tank" but when I go to "looped return" it seems to get air in there a bunch.

Got to go thru the system again and tighten up, etc.

just curious, how reliable has your setup been?

Re: how much air is ok in fuel system?

I do not have the G set up on WVO yet. I was waiting for your report about that new filter!!! We have two TD's running WVO through the big Racors and then through vegtherm inline heaters. I have them on looped return with absolutely no problems. I have a valve that can select return to tank or loop depending on fuel or if there is some air that needs to be sent to the tank. Absolutely no issues so far. I settle the oil well and then filter through 25 and then 10 micron filters.

Do you think you might have a little air trapped in the top of the filter housing?

Cheers mate,
