Posts: 686 | Re: BLOWING SMOKE ON 280GE I say valve stems, so many 280 engine were wrongly diagnosed in the UK because of this problem and engines were replaced when they didn't need to. I would say every 80 to 110K for valve stem replacement. the M110 is good for 300k so dont be too worried. One thing to do when you take the rocker cover off, there is a guaze filter behind a metal plate with 4 rivets holding it in, behind that is the gauze filter, this is the breather and these get clogged with crud causing pressure in the rocker cover, so when you back of on the gas pedal pressure can cause the oil to push past the valve stems. You will need to soak the gauze in petrol overnight and clean throughly. Edited by G wizz 7/17/2007 12:54 PM

You will need to soak the gauze in petrol overnight and clean throughly. Also, the situation when driving and getting off the gas pedal and stepping on again, will create a nice vacuum in the intake manifold which might suck the oil in, past the non-sealing valve stem seals. The engine will ingest the added oil with the fuel and burns it with a puff of smoke out of the exhaust. As Hipine mentioned before, then the burned oil residue might settle in the cylinder head and piston top and can cause pre-ignition & pinging & possible damage to engine. Karl
