Romania

I just got back from 2 weeks offroading in Romanian Carpathian mountains. Thanks to all of you who contributed advice beforehand. 15 cars started and 7 finished. What hit us was extreme heat--up to 42 degrees celsius in shade (108 F). In the valleys gravel roads produced dust unseen in the desert (so said Sahara experienced ones). In the mountains water crossings and rocks. Main failures were:
nissan patrols: radiators, fans, water hoses, engine, windshield, alternators
toyotas LC: radiator, bumpers
Gs:radiator, fan, thermostat
LR: fan, suspension, frame,
nissan navarra; exhaust, underbody plates
jeep wranglers: panhard rods, broken axles, exhaust, alternators (all three quit)
mitsubishi pajero and L200: alternator, radiator, fan, thermostat, lost spacers (replaced by one carved out of wood)

Our 280GE almost lost a wheel(loosened screws got cut off, 3 out of 5), then a puncture (repair kit), lost A/C day one (short curcuit), lost CB antenna,   lost alternator the last day (returned on batteries recharged/bought at gas stations), and got fuel hose ruptured sprinkling gasoline everywhere--easy fix. We also had problems with AT steering (used manual  option a lot) and low revs engine dying. I have a list of 26 things to check/repair now.

Great test for the 20 years old G--we finished the trip while fairly new and heavily tuned  wranglers did not.

I heartily recommend Romania to all the fans of overland/offroad. It is a beautiful country with fantastic people and fairly accessible wilderness (permits for national parks not so difficult). In a few years when thousands of 4x4s will descend there all those possibilities will be closed.

RE: Romania

It sounds like a very good trip. One of our other forum members (christian_g), who has a G400CDI, lives in Bucharest.

RE: Romania

A very good trip indeed. Some more pictures here:

I just want to add that if some of the pictures look ancient/backward/exotic--this is not the real today Romania. I obviously hunted for the unusual, and being in a very secluded part of Romania (Maramuresz) it was relatively easily to find such views. Romania has modern gas stations and horses do not run the streets of bigger cities. The kindness of people is unmatched in other parts of Europe.

Very nice. When we visited Graz in Sept 2005, Christian had invited me to fly into Bucharest and ride with him and his wife across Romania and Ungarn to Graz. Sadly, I was not able to do it. Looks like I missed some real beauty. Thanks for posting those photos!

RE: Romania

I can recomend it, made a very interesting trip 8 weeks ago with the F3 GT teams trucks.45 of them, the drivers said it was an experience of a life time.
The contrast in life style there is incredible from the absolute ultra modern and new rich in the capital to the wonderful scenery and a life still in the 40s when in the country.

I love the list of failures. Lots of rads and other heat related problems but the critical failure happens on the LR.... oh and Jeeps.

Looks like an amazing trip. Good to see a 20 year old G doing well.

Re: Romania

I travelled through Romania in 1975. My favorite memory was the tswika. This was a morning eyeopening drink that even young teenagers were given. It was 190 proof alcohol which sat right next to the orange juice on the tables at breakfast. I wonder if this is still done?

Re: Romania

No more 'tswika"?
But a lot of "palinka'.
I put up some more pictures.

Re: Romania

What type of G fan and radiator failures were there - were they mechanical engine driven fans or electric ? Did radiators fracture/ explode?

RE: Romania

Looks like a great trip!

Take that sunset pic, crop it to a vertical aspect ratio just left of the peak and you've got a nice magazine cover......except for one thing....my pet peeve....The doors are open!

I slap my head every time I get back some nice pix of a vehicle in the wild, only to discover a door open.  Seems something a touch indecent about it somehow.

There are a lot of canned up rules in photography books about "rules of thirds", trees growing out of people's heads, etc.  Man, somebody oughta put "check the car doors" on those lists somewhere.

Nothing personal, and thanks for sharing.  I think I'm just glad somebody besides me out there is doing this.

That pic really is a beautiful one.  The feeling of solitude and connection to nature comes right through with a splash of the innocence of youth in the boy in the foreground.  Really nice.  Tell you what, bring me along next time and I'll make sure I close all the doors after people get out.  :

RE: Romania

Here you go. I will work on the doors in photoshop. Indeed! Most of the pictures I took have doors open!
Our friends' daughter, 4 year old Maya, and her 9 year old brother travelled bravely with us.

All three Gs had double fans- main mechanical/viscose and additional electric connected to A/C. The electric ones failed-either them or A/C thermostatic switches. Once our A/C failed (day one it short circuited and blew fuses) we drove with windows open. Since I had had a thourough service of the cooling (exchanged the radiator and other parts, installed the missing fan shroud) I experienced no real problems. Temperature rose to 3/4 (last notch before red) in the worst climbs. The others with old/clogged radiators or missing shrouds had overheating problems. Next time I am going to have the electric fan switchable from the dash. Our friends' Mitsubishi L200 overheated until they hot wired their A/C fan.

It looks like a fantastic trip. Just the kind I'd love to take some time.  Great of you to get the kids along.  They're at a perfect age to be experienicing those kinds of things.  Wonderful job.  And thanks again for sharing the great pix.
