Oil To Full... message.

I changed my oil 4300 miles ago.... Put in the recomended amount, checked the dip stick and it said full.

Well today, ( 4300 miles later) im traveling down I-81 with cruise set on 73mph... Out of no where... Red screan of death... CHECK OIL, OIL OVER FULL, or something along those line. Message says on for about a mile, ( level road) and then goes off but its stored in my faults. When i turned the car off it said it again..

Got back in town, and checked the oil, Of course it showing full because it been on for 3 hours and ive traveled 112 miles today.... I push the computer oil thingee and it says " server on time, no problems"

So do you think this falls back to that sensor your guys where talking about last year.. I tried to search but i couldnt find the correct topic i guess. I Think i remember you all saying you get a LOW oil messege if the sensor is dirty... but i dont recall anything about having too much oil. Im guessing its something freaky like usual with my G because i would hope i would have gotten this message a lot sooner.

What's the "recommended amount" you added? My experience with the M113 engine is that 8 qts is plenty for a change with filter. If your oil is growing, you might want to check for coolant in the oil (foam or milkiness); which would mean a head gasket leak.

No worries.
In 2002 all MBs had a ultra anal sensor in which if you put in a tiny bit over the recommended amount it will alert you. A frind of mine had a C-class that did the same thing. I am sure that when you changed the oil you drained the crankcase thoroughly and changed the filter. But any residual can lead to a warning. With this siystem it is better to be shy of the max rather than spot on. If you can run a pipe down the dipstick tube and draw out a bit of oil till the sensor is happy all will be back to normal.

Re: Oil To Full... message.

When i changed it i put in 9 quarts i think... bottom line it was correct on the dip stick.. I think the dealer may have put in oil for some reason. It has been in the shop for 2 week for the ac condencer. which i just got back last week.

I checked the oil cold this morning and its past the red thingee that say min max.. so i guess ill have to suck some out, or just have it changed again, and then watch it. Just seem very strange that all the sudden i have way to much oil. The oil is dirty brown, but it always looks like that...

If you change it, use 8 qts to refill. It's plenty!

Is dirty brown common? I thought it was always a clear light brown. Maybe it is just my Old School ways talking. Of course with a diesel you pour it in clear and after a couple of miles it is black.

Re: Oil To Full... message.

I put 9 quarts in the other day w/ a new filter. No error messages.

On a related note - how do I reset the service interval?

I followed the instructions in my manual:
- key in position 1 or 2
- scroll to the info screen in the cluster
- hold the reset button for 4 seconds
- when prompted confirm by hitting the reset button again

I never get the prompt! I'm now getting the annoying xxx miles past due on service every time I start the engine.

Did the procedure change in 03 or 04 or 05? I had the brain transplant sometime in 04 or 05 (can't remember exactly).

Is there another way that I can do it w/o any special equipment or code readers?

I can't say for sure on your G or the year models; but when the ML had an upgrade to their computer, the whole reset procedure changed, too.

Dutch,

What is the ML procedure? It might work for me.

Look over in the W164 Forum. I posted it there. However, keep in mind that my posting is for a 2007; and I understand that the 2006 is not the same. Still, it never hurts to try.
