Missing G Found

You may or may not know that I have a more than passing interest in former special ops G wagens, for some time now I have been following up a rumour that there was one in a museum in the USA, well the inteligence system still works. It is a former USMML 280 or 230 GE swb 1989 it has a further history after East German ops in that it whent to Iraq in 1991 to operation "Provide Comfort" it now resides on display at Fort Huachuca Arizona. If any one is near there I would love some detailed close up pics of the truck and any info available.

Sometimes the best acts of kindness are done anonymously; and far be it from me to break someone's anonymity. Since he's a member, if he chooses to do so, I'm sure he's fully capable of identifying himself.

Perhaps you could share some of the photos? Happy 2007!

RE: Missing G Found

Just for clarification (and so no one thinks I'm running around with an assumed name) my name is Adrian. I used the lost G search as an excuse to visit part of Southern Arizona that I hadn't seen for a few years. The clincher for the timing of the trip was a not terribly common desert snowstorm. The snow level was just a little higher than the elevation of the Military Intelligence Museum at Ft. Huachuca so I drove up the canyon behind the fort for several miles; that's where the picture of my G was taken.
Ft. Huachuca was established in 1877 to surpress the Apache Indian tribe in its resistance to the settlement of this part of the world. Cochise and Geronimo were the big players. After their neutralization, the fort hosted the Buffalo Soldiers who were black soldiers segregated from the regular US army. Troops from Ft. Huachuca chased Pancho Villa around southern Arizona and northern Mexico under General Pershing before WWI. Now the fort hosts the headquarters for the US Army Intelligence School.
I found my G through unknown and unseen friends on these G forums (G came from Alaska G-wagen, free brush guard from w5yk, 16in. wheels from former poster, lots of assistance from Dutch, etc.). I was glad to go on a thouroughly enjoyable mission for Roughneck to pay forward all of the guidance, assistance and camaraderie I have found here. Cheers and Happy New Year to all! RE: Missing G Found

Round trip from Tucson to Ft. Huachuca can't be more than 150 miles. Like I said, I enjoyed every minute, except that the Mexican restaraunt I found for lunch was pretty unexceptional by local standards. A

As a further footnote, what you have to remember is that there was no Autoclub,in the DDR you couldn't just phone for a tow,if you did,you were compromised, and had a lot of very "Nasty" people, coming to visit you very quickly!

So every time these vehicles came back to Berlin, all the fluids were checked and/or changed, they would have had what could be classed as an interim service every 600/1000kms,and a major service, once every 7 days!

Also the body panels tended to get a bit "Careworn",the Soviets, and East German Armed Forces/Security Services, played rough if you were unlucky enough to encounter them (every day,on average),so given the price of MB spare parts, and the man hours it's not a bad total,on top of which it was paid for out of a rather large "Slush Fund",called The Berlin Senate, which was, funded by the West German government, down in Bonn, who also made the initial purchase of the vehicles supplied to all the Allied Missions. So it cost all us taxpayers zilch!

The roof mount IR is on the Bosnian BGS, Dave will tell us about BRIXMIS kit.
