Not the turbo engine??

Ha, good eye.

No, the turbo engine will be installed in my 280GE with a Getrag 5sp.
My 280GE I drive a lot more and fuel prices are killing me. So I plan to install a diesel, and thought, why not the 617a I already have.

My 300GD will keep the n/a 617 for now as I've got so much work on the body I'll be working on it for quite some time.
In the meantime I'll find a 617a as well for this one and install it when the time comes.
Would be nice to have it mobile for starters, so the 617 is sufficient for the next year.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

So finished my years training becoming an officer in the airforce last week, and got a free week before my specialisation starts. So, time to get some work done on the good ol' Kastenwagen! Hoping to have it running at least this summer and go from there.
I did install my om617+711.113 5sp last christmas, it was now time to do some more rust repair in the back.

- The rear section of my rear fender panels I repaired with some home-made sheet metal. Worked out nice! See pics.
- The bottom section of the rear cargo-door frame was pretty rusted away as well. From MB, you can only buy the part that goes from the roof down to the floor, so together with my brother I fabbed a few repair sections for the bottom part.
- welded in the rear sheet metal that later goes under the MB rear section.
- I did buy and install a car lift in the meantime making work ever so more comfortable. Lifting the car to the desired height to do your job. This will save me a lot of time in the future with all the project I'm intending to do.
- With a lot of preparation done, now starting to weld in the MB repair sections. They all fit really nice and progress seems really big now all of a sudden! Hopefully next weekend I'll have the left rear corner ready.

Also thinking how I should prepare all the repaired metal and repair sections against future rust. Have to find some kind of (spray) paint to prime it. Will also put some sealer on all the weld seams.

Great fab job. For me there is nothing like the process of figuring out how to make it yourself.

Congrats. Keep the photos coming.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

I thought I'd post some pics of the work I did a few months ago.
Finished the rear section. Last stage of filling the seams with body sealant and painting everything with some 'special' bond is not shown.
But all the panels are in place and in primer stage. Quite happy how it all fits now and the rust preparation done so far. Hopefully for this car, it will last at least 15 yrs!

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

And in a later stage started on the rocker panels.
First removed the custom made rock slider by the previous owner and cut out the outside part of the rocker.
I won't use MB parts for this, but will make a profile out of steel myself.
I got some ideas to build some rock sliders on this car, have to see about the measurements how it all works out. Will update soon.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Build some new rocker panels today. Copied the original angels a bit and modified a little where I found I should alter the design. Nicest thing is I don't have a spot weld seam on the underside now, I think these will work fine for me.

Made them out of 2mm steel, I will see if I can upload the drawing in pdf in here for the measurements and angles.

Got some days off the upcoming week(s) so may can start preparing the body for welding in these panels in the body.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Now with my other G being om602'd and for the moment finished, I can continue with my Kasten.

Next thing to do was installing those rocker panels I made.
So today more cutting in the body, to make these panels fit. Only had 2,5 hours, so didn't completely have them ready for fitment, but next weekend more work I can do.

See also next pics.
The parts 'behind' the rear fender are pretty rusted, and this causes rust on my fender-edge as well.
To restore this, I think I will cut the body along the black lines.
I can restore this fender part seperately on the workbench, it's not that bad, here and there some new sheet metal.
Then with this fender out of the way, I can weld in new reinforcement pieces. Nr. 17 and 20 on the EPC pic is what I need I think.
When these are welded in, I can weld in the fender part again and finish it.
The rocker panel comes in afterwards.
Same procedure on the driver side. Will keep me off the streets for some days huh

Gr. Bram

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Here's some result of last friday:

Did the cutting of the fender, no way back now...

Restored the rustspot en the fender line, quite happy with the result.

Now time to build it up all back again, new reinforcement piece should be in by the dealer and my rocker panel is also almost prepared ready for installation.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

With my laptop crashed, I need some help getting the right EPC info.

Please look at following pictures. Does someone know the partnummer of those strips indicated by the red arrows (left and right side)? Those reinforcement strips are located behind the rear fender arch and go from the rocker panel to the belt line of the body.

The VIN is for a 1982 300GD lwb, van body style, but I believe this part is the same for the 5 dr version (looking at my 280GE).

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Bram,
I couldn't find the part in the 460 section of the EPC. It is available in the 463 section, but then there are some footnotes about reinforcement and wider fenders.

For my cabrio I ordered the part from a 461366 . (group 63, subgroup 015). As far as I can see this part must fit in your Kastenwagen too.

The partnumbers are

Left side A 460 637 23 24
Right side A 460 637 24 24

@ Mark; that's what i thought too, but these are other reinforcements. Didn't know they're there, but they are!

@ Wout; thanks! That is looking good. I'll order one and check the fitment.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Wout, i still have a question about these parts;
At the dealer your listed partnumbers came back as nr 20 in your epc pic.

The parts listed as nr 350 showed the following numbers:
A4636370024
A4636370124

Can you check these numbers again if you will?

Thanks, Bram

On my 463 SWB I am showing it to be #29.

Or on the 461s... #26.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Bram,

I did a reversed search on the numbers and then indeed a different part showed up.

As I am using the on-line EPC from DC, which should be up to date, I'm lost in the german logic.

Looking in the 463 section, the EPC came up with the numbers 463 637 00 24 and 01 24.

Also with 463 630 25 11 and 26 11. Here the notes mention a B6 and B7 Schutzklasse.

I think the numbers 463 637 00 24 and 463 637 0124 are correct.

Mark,

The parts You are reffering to, are inside panels. The parts we are talking about are welded on these panels.

With kind regards,

Wout.

RE: 300GD Kastenwagen, shouldn't do it, but...

Bram,
I just double checked the on-line EPC data with my fixed EPC at home.
The partnumbers 463 637 00 24 and 01 24 are correct.

The numbers 463 630 25 11 and 26 11 are for armoured cars and have
an extra metal piece welded on top.

You find both parts listed in de the 461 section.

(461342, Group 63 , subgroup 045.)

My fixed EPC gives the same error on the 350 part. Cannot find the reason why.
