| M-B safety recall
Not sure if this has been mentioned but.... When I bought this G I registered the VIN with MB USA (mine is a 2000). I just recieved a recall campaign I thought I'd pass on to others with a 1998-2001. It says the harmonic balancer may deteriorate due to heat, and offers to have any dealer replace it free of charge. The service campaign is #2005-020003 |

If you can get MBUSA to do the job, more power to ya! They generally won't lay a wrench on non-MBUSA models, much less do any Safety Recall work. Also, it was apparently NOT done on the same models in Europe.
Let us know how you make out. A copy of the US-DOT-NHTSA Safety Recall Notice from April 2005 is attached.
FWIW, I did this on mine myself a year or two ago.

I had a harmonic balancer about to disintegrate on a W220 S320 at work, which with the M112-engine suffers from the same as the M113 G500. Had driven the car for a few days, noticed it made a strange strange vibration at idle and not as silk smooth as it would usually do. In a break I had a look under the hood and it was clearly visible that the rubber section of the balancer was wiggling out.
So yes, it is noticable when about to let go, NO, I wouldn't wait that long! Don't dare to think of the expenses if it had failed completely while flooring that S-class out on the open road.... |

nhtsa.gov didn't seem to have much on the recall section. |

I'm blessed with a friendly dealer. One of the top service guys loves G's, and works on a couple pre-MBUSA ones. They even let me help change the shocks! In case anyone new is in the DC area, they are Euromotorcars Bethesda. The service writer is Mark Singer, and he's a real car guy. |

I have seen them blow upper and lower oil pan,critical loss of oil,seized engine and chaching....... |

In 05, my wife's E320 harmonic balancer made the list and the dealer replaced it free of charge. They told me that if the balancer had disintegrated they would still have replaced the balancer for free but all the damage to the engine caused by it would have been my cost.

I had to replace mine at 39,800 miles. Lots of racket under the hood and yes it can dig into your oilpan if you don't have it replaced asap. No dealer help on this service for me. |

Yep... 01 CLK430.... playing with some vettes... about 135-140 mph... heard a bad noise then it quit. then i got check engine light.
MB paid for it all but they didnt seem to be to happy. Had the top end of the motor rebuilt / replaced. Im pretty sure they put heads on it and some other stuff. I cant rememer now what the cost was but i think it was like $8-10K! Not sure what they did but that sucker would fly when i got it back. also after the rebuild it would revv 500-700 rpm past red line before it shifted itself, then on the 1-2 shift it would spinn the tires... Car was quite fun after a its hickup.. It also lost a second in the 1/4 mile. car ran a 15.8 before, and 14.7 after.
But buy all means id have them look at it, I ask about my G class and they said they already did it or already checked for it... i cant remember now. Then the tech told the main problem is bolt.. the way he was talking in "mercedes talk" it sound like it's just the bolt they replace.

The bolt gets replaced with the dampner. It's the dampner that can fall apart. |

Just had the harmonic balancer replaced on my 2000 G500 with 75,000 miles so thought I'd add to this thread...
When I bought the G in November 2014 (69,000 miles at that time), I noticed the balancer had visible deterioration -- rubber cracking around the edge. Also, the idle was a little less than smooth at times. I was aware of the recall so I checked with the dealer and the balancer had been replaced in 2005 per the recall (don't know mileage at the time of 2005 replacement).
Last week I was having the G serviced by a very reputable local MB specialist. He confirmed that the balancer had been replaced in 2005, but agreed it needed replacement again and said he could do it for 435 USD. The price seemed very reasonable to me so I let him replace it. Idle is nice and smooth now.
Like I said, I'm not sure how many miles were on the G when it received the first replacement balancer in 2005. However, I still consider this to be a low-mileage Europa G500 and I'm surprised that it's already needed a 2nd non-recall balancer. Anybody else experienced this?

It's only on the M112 and M113 engines, but the G was not "officially" a part of the recall. See the PDF file I posted earlier in this thread to see what was on the "official" list. |

The G is still in Birmingham so I had it done there. The shop is Central Auto Care. They service only MB -- mostly vintage coupes and sedans. They've seen 1 other europa G500 and get plenty of MBUSA trucks.

Sounds like a good resource for any G owners in that area.
A fellow member just told me of a couple of horrible service screw-ups by an authorized MBUSA dealer. A good Indie is worth their weight in gold! |
