Mike, looking at your red cross bars, I really like them... care to make another set?!?! i'm just looking for cross bars right now and searching around... Anyway, and perhaps more importantly, is there any way you can re-bolt them to the ends of the trays instead of where they are currently... looks like they're in about 8 inches from each end? Seeing them that close together makes me really nervous on the long term durability of things... i'd really like to recommend moving them as far apart as possible. If those cans were sitting flat it wouldn't bother me so much, but i wouldn't be that surprised if those things dodn't peel themselves off the top of your roof as the result of a failure of the little clamp down bracket. The torque that those cans standing tall are going to be able to generate on brackets spaced that narrow is gonna be pretty big, and spacing them out just a little will go a LONG way. It would take me a while to describe what's going on here, and i'm not necessarily that good at long descriptiong, but the narrow spacing between them has me twitching... and just re-bolting them at the ends of the tray would make a BIG difference. | ||

Erik, I pick up what your puttin' down. That was the one thing I like about the Hanibal racks, as they had the 'full length" runner that ran the length of the gutter and could handle loads better and torque ( as you put it). I did contemplate spacing the bars as you suggested when I first made them heeding only to concerns of even weight distribution and not torque, as my old rack (which I still have) would sag when the cans were mounted on it...but they had thinner gauge aluminum bars. There is 4' overhang for the jerry can trays. The reason for this is that I used the existing holes in the trays. The crossbars I made are VERY heavy gauge steel. I made a third cross bar to use as a "buffer" bar which would fit in the center, if I wanted, or utilize anywhere on the roof in case I had to carry a ladder or something long. I agree with your point of the cans sticking up (vertical) versus laying down or horizontal. I like these trays as they can remain on my crossbars (less cans and straps) and still fit into my garage. Back to your thoughts on spacing, there are other holes closer to the ends, and from your suggestion, may opt to try it...although, I like the overhang on the back which puts the cans closer to be accessible for filling and dispensing. Those clamps are on there pretty good and have had no issues with 3 Death Valley trips and miles of washboard roads.....not saying that it is right. I just took a couple of photos....hell, it might take me 10 minutes to change. Thanks for the heads up. If I only had a diesel, I would have to carry half the fuel, and would build mounts in the cargo area inside. I had to do some custom grinding on the brackets and bars to make them fit inside the channel. If you do not have the tools or means to do this, I would suggest buying the brackets/clamps and take them to a metal shop and tell them what you want done. I remember some shops in SSF and I think there are a couple in San Carlos. Rain water and condensation runs underneath the rubber, but then it can't evaporate. Pretty soon it will start to rust. I found it was better just to lay the Hannibal rack directly into the gutter with no rubber. The aluminum doesn't damage the paint much. I put a bit of oil in the gutters occasionally just to keep any rust from getting started. No rust in the last 5 years, but I had some after a couple of months using the rubber. | ||

As the picture will tell, all weight from the rack will be along the gutter in all its length. The spare wheel is very heavy (235/17,5 tire), and it's mounted to the roof rack on a sliding bracket. You can draw the sliding bracket out, and tilt it down towards the passengers door. Torstein I now have one of these ambulance tire roof carriers in my possession. Thought I'd share some pictures how it's mounted and how that tire slides out. Indeed it's supported by the entire gutter lenght, I didn't screw on the securing plates when trial fitting this rack. I probably aren't going to use it, but this info might be interesting to others: Enjoy, gr. Bram ] ] ] ] ] And this is after you slide it out. It fits a 463 as well as a 460 or 461. Heavy, strong and well designed. I'll have some action pics next month on my 1999 version G class.
