No, that's not juvenile. It's just sad.... bit like trainspotting really.

Not sure about roofracks and camp gear, our politics, currency, beer, morality and languages but I really don't think there is too much competition to the ICV's , APC's and MPV's that we make in SA. Enough of us died to learn how to do them right. Incidentally Nugat/ Maxwell during the years of isolation from the rest of the world SA was forced to develop all sorts of parallel technologies in isolation, (nuclear, aviation, weapons systems, avionics, military etc) some of which were eagerly sought by the rest of the world after '94. But there's not much of it left. (A friend of mine for eg. designed and builds a heads up laser rangefinder and sight for the US M16 rifle and the 40mm grenade launcher, featured on Discovery as an AMERICAN invention) And our biggest current customer for ICV / MPV type vehicles is the USA. So far about 2000 vehicles with a new licence satellite plant to be built in USA. But I don't think Mr Thule is ex South African!

I looked all over the Thule website but could not find it. I have spoken with import agency for Thule here in Norway, and they told me that the whole project with Thule Heavy Duty baskets was TERMINATED. Due to high costs and low interess in the market, Thule had deciced one or two weeks before easter to stop the whole product series ( Thule heavy duty baskets ) Since Thule also have stoppet the Thule Titan production, this means that offroaders that need a LARGE roofrack, have to look elsewhere. As the picture will tell, all weight from the rack will be along the gutter in all its length. The spare wheel is very heavy (235/17,5 tire), and it's mounted to the roof rack on a sliding bracket. You can draw the sliding bracket out, and tilt it down towards the passengers door. Torstein (takgrind.JPG) Attachments ---------------- takgrind.JPG (38KB - 5 downloads)

While at the Oregon G-treffen, Steve Smith was flaunting his mounting clamps to me, which are known as "Quick-N-Easy", and of which he uses for mounting his rooftop house/cave/tent. I thank you all for your great suggestions and ideas and anyone looking for ideas should find this thread very helpful in the future. Here are some photos. I made two of these cross bars of oak and put a special high corrosion resistant coating on the fasteners. I used to carry up to three canoes (two down and one on top between the two down) on my 1984 280GE. The total of eight (8) mounts spread the 300 or so pounds very well across the gutters. FWIW, these also fit the 2000 G500 perfectly with no adjustment required. Sadly, they just sit in the corner of my garage gathering dust and cobwebs. Maxwell Smart Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Simple roof rack ideas suggestions The feet on that one look an awful lot like Thule feet. There was a proper military G rack like the Canadians have for sale on ebay recently. But very expensive at about £1,200 ($2,400 USD) or so if I remember correctly. I don't know who makes it but do know that the factory is either in or near Graz.

Dutch, how did your Quick-N-Easy hold up on rough roads ? Mike No problem, but the canoes were tied to the bumpers; so the downward pull of the tie-down ropes kept firm pressure on the Q-N-E's to stay firmly in the gutters.
