RE: Source to find 5 speed gearbox

Well, eventually the conclusion is:
Technically possible to swap some gears in between these two types of gearboxes...
but gearing wise it doesn't make sense.

Yesterday we disassembled the 711.113 and after disassembly counted all the teeth on the gears to do some calculations.
Already we saw that the constant gear (from input shaft to counter shaft) was pretty different. To that extend that the 1st gear gearing of the 711.110 and 711.113 is actually the same, but only the much lower constant gear ratio makes up the low 1st on the 711.110.
Trying to put in the overdrive 5th gear of the 711.113 in the 711.110 eventually makes up a final ratio of about 1:0,95; the overdrive is killed by the constant gear so to say (5th gear ratio of 711.113 is 46:25, constant gear ratio of 711.110 is 18:35). So 4 and 5th gear are then both approx a direct 1:1 drive, no use...

Oh well, I do now have got all the tooling to disassemble such a gearbox and replace gaskets, seals and bearings, but the low first and overdrive five configuration isn't going to make it without fabricating custom gears.

Thickness of gauge 711589002300

Being in the process of assembling 711.11x gearboxes, I need some dimensions of MB special tooling.

See attachment as well.
I need a gauge for the main shaft. I should be fairly easy to fabricate by myself if I would know the thickness of this gauge.

Does anybody have any dimensions or tech-info on the 711589002300 main shaft gauge? Thickness is most important.
In the webparts, this pn doesn't come up as a known part.

Thanks, Bram

It does show up as a special tool in the EPC, but no dimensions are provided. See attached.

If I knew the VIN of the vehicle for that transmission, I might be able to look it up in the WIS to see if they mention the thickness.

RE: Thickness of gauge 711589002300

Using the WIS and arrowing down the model designations looking at the major assembly numbers for 'MG', I ran in to a 711.117 in the 461.227 (230GE).

Drilling into group 26 (Manual Transmission), in the special tools there's page WS26.00-N-3165C.

Unfortunately, that doc doesn't provide much in the way of information on dimensions. Any idea what the 'FG 26/Set C' is applicable to?

Wondering if one of those special tool boxes like the one found here: http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=21936 would have something like it.

RE: Source to find 5 speed gearbox

Thanks guys for trying to look up this thickness for me.

I may visit some tranny rebuilders where hopefully some of the older employees got some memory or tools for these old transmissions.

I don't think this gauge is part of that toolbox, that is more for general vehicle maintenance I'd say.
This is really rebuilding tools and should be part of more specialized tool sets.

It would be great to find a complete transmission tool set, so many special tools ...

The gauge is 2,3 mm thick. General adjustments sheet from the WIS has been sent to your email and is also attached here.
