Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

Anybody interested in a G-wagen (or similar) trip down the Baja California maybe in the middle of December of 2008?

I know of a blow hard German Travel Guide (with a cat) to hire, so we don't miss a thing - lonely beaches, great food, unbelievable sites and loose......there was something else...

Like to hear all your ideas

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

Yeah......

not able to make it before Christmas......but like to postpone the trip into January 2009 (second week).

Driving down the Baja into La Paz and/or Cabo could be lot's of fun since Desertstar's automatic transmission is not slipping anymore.

Looking for some fun travel company with G-wagen (anything else would be fine too ) , Spanish language skills would be appreciated - so I can rest my Teutonic gestures and outbursts......Lentil soup with "Einlage" could/will be provided!

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

Karl, are you thinking about the 4th - 10th week or the one after? How much time would you estimate needed, not including travel time from home to border and back? I've been dying to drive Baja and have never crossed into Mexico with a vehicle on such a trip. What is needed as far as papers for the car, any preliminary paperwork that would need to be taken care of in advance before arriving at the border? It's pretty short notice, but I MIGHT be able to pull it off. I will be in Las Vegas the weekend of the 10th, soooo I might just be able to do something here. I'd have to see if grandma would watch the kiddo as her passport has not arrived yet, and change flying plans to driving plans to LV. Are wives invited??? We'll see, don't change plans for me. I'll just see if I can make it work and if not I'll catch you on the next one. -James

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

James,

yeah the week after the 10th looks pretty doable ......
My wife would fly down to La Paz or Cabo for the weekend so I could have more time doing the drive. Maybe 10 days or so......you will need a valid driver license (just kidding) passport, and Mexican Insurance for the G-wagen.... haven't talked to Desertstar yet......would be real nice.......go visit Harald at his hacienda.......celebrate the 30th G-wagen anniversary with a few Pacifico's and good food.

Any input is invited

Karl

I always forget to check this board for new postings.  Karl (or Harald for that matter) how long of a drive is it from Los Angeles ?  It looks like 600 miles.

Mike,

I'm planning on three days to travel to La Paz, hang out there for a few days and then make the trip back.

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

Karl & Mike, I could be in LA the night of the 10th and I would really need to be back in LA by the 20th in order to make the 12 hr drive home the 21st and be at work the morning of the 22nd. Could this work for you? I have plans to be in LV for the classic motorcycle auction the 8th-11th anyway, I can easily cancel my flight and do the drive. My wife is very much into the idea and so as you know, daddy needs to make it work somehow Let me know if this could work for you guys.

Mexican insurance is bought at the border I assume? How much does that run? Could you give me any ideas of spare parts that would be a good idea to get my hands on. I assume fuel cans are recommended.

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

James,

you can do the mex insurance over the net
http://www.igib.com/
have been doing that for years

Baja GPS maps here:
http://www.lbmaps.com/
not really needed as they have pretty much only one paved road

the best paper map is the AAA Baja map - it makes GPS almost obsolete

there is not really anything special you need for Baja
Passport for the return to the US helps

Mexico wants you to get a Tourist card at the border (about $25 per person)
complicated and not really needed
there is only one spot where they check for that paper
that is at the border between Baja Norte and Baja Sur (remember to set your clock to Mountain time when crossing south)
what I have done for years is to go around that border checkpoint (why would someone need a border crossing between two states? only to harass you!)
about a mile before you get to that border (huge structure is visible for miles in the flat desert) a road to the airport turns off to the right. Follow that road, its good dirt, it takes you straight into town.
border crossing on Google is
N28 00' 04.27
W114 00' 44.77

There is one stretch without gas station. Therefor you must fill up in El Rosario (about 60 Kilometers after San Quintin). Next gas station is in Jesus Maria (yes, indeed the name of a village). But they only have regular gas. If you have enough you can fill up in Guerrero Negro with premium gas. The town that follows, Vizcaino, does not have premium either.
No need to carry spare gas - the 500 will make it with ease.

in terms of driving time:
aim to spend the night in Catavina (about $85)- if you are too tired get a room in either San Quintin or El Rosario (cheap and good)
from Catavina its a very long day to La Paz - even if you start at 6 in the morning
when I get too tired to drive to La Paz, I spend the night in Loreto (from there 5 hours to La Paz). Downtown is nice, they have a few outdoor restaurants close to the Mission church. Then arrive relaxed the next day in La Paz. Why get here all exhausted - too tired to enjoy the beers.

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

I forgot - under no circumstances get gas in Santa Rosalia!!!
you will be taken advantage of at all their gas stations
they have more tricks than you have eyes
I always fill up in Mulege (gas station is just south of town)

here is how I always plan for getting gas and possible hotels:
gas San Diego
gas Ensenada (go for the new empty gas stations)
gas El Rosario
Hotel Desert Inn - Catavina http://www.desertinns.com/
gas Mulege
gas Ciudad Constitucion

if trucks in front of you turn on their left blinkers, they are signaling you, it is safe to pass

Harald - very nice my friend!

I just got notice today that all my airfreight from Germany came in already and I hope to install everything before Christmas and complete the work scope even this year.

So, looks like I'm off the hook and free to travel - need to talk to my buddy Mike - start looking at your shopping list

James,

we probably could meet in San Diego or let say Calexico, depending where are you coming from.......so let's think about it for a little while.

Dutch,

the starting point is always at the end of your drive way - you just have to start there a couple days earlier

I'm ready now, even we are starting to drive a week from now - loaded the Spanish tutor onto the i-thingi, got the really great AAA-maps from a paying member in good standing (thanks Susan) and thinking to ask for large FedEx Stickers to place on the front doors (thanks Harald)

It looks like the 2009 G-wagen trip season is starting of well, with good Kameradschaft, fine Mexican cuisine, some cold ones and maybe a few sips of the other white wine (will miss you Steve).

Our head of overnight security GSP River is ready as well, trained her relentless barking at a black&white back yard visitor last night.

RE: Baja del Sure Trip in December 2008?

Yup, I'm down to the last few details. The wife and kido and I will hit the road on Thurs morning to drive to Lost Wages, see some cool old bikes there at the Mid West Auctions classic motorcycle auction. Then onto San Diego Sat to pick up Rick at the airport and rendezvous with you Karl.

Serpentine belt, check
K40 relay, check
CPS, check

Tomorrow an oil change, fuel filter and transmission service.

Still need Mex insurance, I think I'll get it with AAA when I get my maps.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, still waiting on my wife's passport to arrive She may have to meet us down there and join us on the return trip. We were so

focused on getting one for my daughter, we over looked the fact that hers has expired It was expedited on the 26th, so it will be tight.

We will, but you have to bail us out or at least send some fresh fruit baskets to that Mexican jail we might be sitting in
