Cool!  One thing that both the intake pipe and the radiator DO have in common is a lot of air flow.  And air flow can cause static charge buildup and realease as a little spark.  Maybe that's the idea of the braids on those parts, to let static charge bleed off without giving you a "pop" in the radio.

Note the mounting of the intake filter/airduct is otherwise well isolated, mounted on those nice rubber blocks and the throat rubber gasket - perfect for those static sparks to fly......

Heh buddy, those 280GE were once the top of the line/food chain and came with all the whistle & bells, disco ball and all....the "Eighties" (here's my favorite....)

RE: W460 earth/ground straps...intake side

Well, almost 8 years later....It turned out to be the ground wire from the headlamp switch.  Added an alternate ground wire to that wire(before) it meets the ground cluster under the dash.  No more "jumping" fuel and temperature gauges.   The flickering gauges had previously been solved by insuring all ground/earth mountings were clean.

We can now all sleep better tonight.

Re: W460 earth/ground straps...intake side

Hello from Greece,
I confirm that the flickering instrument problem in my 1989 230 GE solved with a new ground wire from the battery negative to the (single) rotary light switch ground and to the (double) instrument ground.
thanks DesertStar

Re: W460 earth/ground straps...intake side

Hello everyone! New to this forum and I thank you for sharing your experiences.

Unfortunately, I’m still fighting the flickering gauges. I added ground from the battery to the headlights switch and to the cluster, but that didn’t fix the problem. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

DesertStar, can you please provide more details on your solution. I’m not sure I understand exactly what you did when you say you added “an alternate ground wire to that wire(before) it meets the ground cluster.”

Thanks again.

I can't remember the fine details as it  was awhile ago.  My mechanic took the ground from the headlight switch and connected to a new ground point separate from the other ground wires(cluster).   Solved the gauges "bumping up" a bit when lights are turned on.  I would assume the flickering when turn signals are on may be solved the same way.

Alex, maybe try the headlight switch to one separate ground rather than have them all to the battery ground....that way if the issue is the switch ground it wouldnt "bleed" back into the other wires(gauges etc) via the battery ground.

Hope this helps.  Sorry for the delayed response... I was at Monterey Car Week.
